Ayre style speaker binding posts ?

I see that a few manufacturers (not many) use this weird style of speaker connection on the back of their amps. What prompted this move vs standard binding posts? I thought it had something to do with selling equipment into European Union countries, but I'm not sure. If that was the case, did this requirement go away? I haven't seen this style of connection catch on with many other manufacturers.

Question: Does this style of speaker connector require Spades or can you poke a Banana style in there and cinch it down?

What is this, why, and what is it called?
