Switching amps - coming of age

- esp. if they have no (clear) drawback in sound. Early efforts had trouble reproducing the high-frequencies, among other things.

It started with Spectron in the 1990s.

But this decade has seen the improved Bel Canto, Nuforce, Jeff Rowland and Channel Island designs.

Then we can add Devialet, D-Sonic, Mola Mola, Merrill Audio, Acoustic Imagery, Anthem, Burmester, MBL, Audio Research and Rogue Audio (RA with an integrated-"D" amp section).

In 10 years time, "switchers" could be the only choice, for quality sound.

But good old linear amps might not die - if the Sanders and Benchmark amps (with their innovative output stage) are any indicators.

In other words, there is still innovation in linear amps.
