trying to determine where a clicking sound is coming from

a couple days ago, i started getting a click about every 2 seconds outa the left channel in my stereo rig. i assumed it was just a tube in my preamp going bad, but when i put in a different set of tubes, i got the same clicking sound from the left channel. i was pretty sure the problem wasn't with a speaker and when i switched 'sides' with the speakers, i found the clicking sound remained in the left channel.
the clicking sound happens when i play both vinyl and cd's, so the problem can't be with my source components. it's down to my preamp and power amp. i suspect the problem is caused by my long-in-tooth audible illusions L1 pre, but i'm trying to come up with a way to make sure that it's not my power amp. i'm none too techy...can i directly attach the ic's from either my cd player or phone stage directly to my power amp? i'm pretty sure i can, but i ask because i just don't wanna do anymore damage to my system.
