Your comments shed light here.
I haven't heard a Primare but am aware of them. Are they durable? Service issues?
Vandersteens do sound a bit recessed and smooth, so that in my friend's system with tubes, it's a very smooth, clean, inoffensive type sound, which isn't my cup. I don't think even the REL helped much, it just sounds like added painted on low bass, not that well integrated.
I like a more powerful and dynamic presentation, but still want the smooth and silky sound. I listen to mostly classical orchestra, shows like soundtracks and such, vocal, some 70-80's pop/rock, Christian rock/pop and vocal and some big band and small group jazz and chamber.
