I just switched back from the IIIa to my 3.7i. The older speaker imaged better due to more upper midrange emphasis, and has clearly superior low bass extension. However, I couldn't live with it longer term as the overall frequency balance -- even with two DWMs -- was just too thin sounding because of the above upper midrange emphasis. It just got annoying after a while in my larger room with my set up and my gear (important caveats)
The newer speaker wisely sacrifices bass extension for quality and quantity in the middle and upper range where most music lives.
