Based on my limited experience, what you describe are the two most likely causes. Not knowing what exactly it was, the cost of crating, shipping, problem resolution and then wondering if the other speaker was the next to go, I decided it was simpler to just replace the 989s with ML ElectroMotion ESLs. I've been quite pleased with them.
