RE: Question for the Quad guru's re: clamping board?

You have received incorrect information. There is all kind of incorrect information floating about concerning the protection circuit of the Quad ESL-63 and it sounds like the same thing has started with the original Quad protection circuit. Quad has never produced a speaker that presents a 'dead-short' to the amplifier under any drive condition and that includes protection circuits engaging. Only an idiot would design such a product and that was not Peter Walker.

The ESL-63 has used several protection approaches over the decades. Since the early protection circuits for the ESL-63 did not absolutely prevent panel arcing late in the production run of the ESL-63 Quad produced a circuit that would absolutely prevent panel arcing. The circuit is basically a string of zener diodes that will act as a crude regulator circuit when they go into avalanche. It does nothing at all until a certain voltage threshold is reached and then is starts to regulate. Voltage can no longer swing any higher protecting the panels. Sonically when the circuit engages it sounds like a tube amp soft clipping.

This same circuit was made available for the original Quad. This is what you have in your speakers.

How these wild stories get started is anyone's guess. If folks would simply look at the schematics for these speakers they would quickly see all of these claims of dead-shorts, etc., are completely unfounded. No doubt some amps have been damaged when connected to Quads for all kinds of reasons. The typical problem is a poorly designed amp that cannot tolerate the load presented by the Quad.
