It's a common mode choke made for line filtering. They are useful in "catching" high frequency line transients. The MOS FRED diodes are sensitive to such pulses. With a tube rectifier, it's not an issue. However, I do recommend that you use a damper diode tube rectifier, like a 6CJ3, etc. A 5AR4 will soften the sound significantly.
