The 9th grade was my introduction to kit building. In those sexist times, all the boys took 'Shop', all the girls took 'Home Ec'. The school arranged purchase of cheap 25w soldering irons, taught us how to 'tin' it and then provided an assortment of simple kits which we built along with electricity theory lessons. We did one term project kit. Mine was a Knight-kit VOM. Others did kits from Eico, Heathkit, Lafayette,....and the year was 1966. Pre-internet. Later I built other kits by Heath. Support was in the form of a well-written instruction manual. One never got the chance to meet any DIY brothers, but I knew they were out there. I'm amazed by the communities formed over the Internet, irrespective of boundaries. How did we live without it?

Welcome, all, to this forum. I hope it will become Information Central for DIY Hifi Supply products and a focus for relevant discussion where experience can shared. Suggestions are welcome. The DIY community is global. Good English is not required. No doubt patterns will emerge that will help us to improve the kits.

I'm grateful to have had the involvement of Kevin Haskins of DIYCable. Everyone loves Kevin. If you're in the US, I recommend you get in touch with him for product inquiries. His moving travails will soon be over.

You may know (or may not): There are 4 DIYHFS products. The Ella, Billie and Basie have sold roughly in equal numbers with the Ella slightly ahead. All are based on Opera Audio Consonance products. The Joplin (Scott, not Janis), has no assembled counterpart (yet). Waiting in the wings is the Django, an S&B transformer based TVC, and the Cole which is a 2 x 12AX7 and EZ80 standalone phono preamp with MC transformer built in. These are just waiting for me to write the instruction manual.

I've recently been told there must be more distance put between the assembled products and DIYHFS products so the kits will no longer be branded with the Consonance name. I'll be meeting with Liu and Mawei in Guangzhou this weekend (at China's largest Hifi show) to finalize the look but intend to stay with the wooden front and feature the model name more prominently.
