Skipping as in getting "click noises" or as in cutting out fractions of seconds in the music?
You can test if overheating is to blame by taking off the top cover temporarily.
If it proves to be temperature related you (or your friend) may need to add ventilation holes to the top cover and in the bottom.
As for the break-in, expect a fair bit of time for this. All the new capacitors in the player take time to settle and if you have the Tinfoil coupling capacitors on the Tube Stage, they tend to sound a bit forward and bright for the first 100 hours or so.
