I have a 20 year old Akai (not sure of model) turntable, belt drive. At the time I bought it, it was a low-mid level model. Since CDs have pretty much taken over, is today's turntable technology more or less the same as it was back then? Therefore is it worth resurrecting it by getting a new cartridge for it (is it possible?). Or should I buy a new unit to get more recent technology and better bang for the buck?

My experience with Japanese turntables is that the Rega Planar 2 will beat them without a doubt. Used quality British TT can be found inexpensively generally around $200
