Hey all,

So I know you're technically supposed to keep records stored perfectly straight in a pitch-black temperature controlled room. But obviously, that isn't always possible.

I'm trying to figure out my storage situation in a new place. Basically, it's impossible to keep all of my records outside of ANY sunlight whatsoever. I guess my question is, is a little bit of indirect sunlight going to be dangerous? Or am I stressing over nothing?

Thanks in advance,

WJ

As long as the ambient temperature around the records doesn't get too high (I'm talking about say 90F to 100F) then you are probably OK. I have amassed more records than I can file away and they are currently in piles and stacks in my study which has the sun coming in and has been getting up to about 86F in Summer. None of them are in direct sunlight and I periodically check the ones "at the front" of a pile and there are no signs of warping.

The VinylFlat is probably a worthwhile purchase as an insurance policy! I have one and it has certainly proved its worth.

So long as temperatures are kept reasonable your main concern will be the fading of spines ( particularly any coloured red). That may be an issue if you have any "collectibles" as value is related to all aspects of their condition. Maybe you could store those somewhere else if there is a small number of them?

Otherwise indirect sunlight shouldn't cause a problem , after all I don't hink most record collectors live in or have their record collection stored in 24 hour darkness.

I converted the garage into my hobby room (I will NOT call it a man-cave) and all the LPs are ensconced in a windowless pitch black temperature and humidity controlled room.

That would be cool if I were a collector! But it's only because they share the space with my home-brewing mead-making and wine cellar area.

Use of a sun blocker with an SPF of 30 or more might help.

I live in Arizona with summer temps about 115 or so. I keep my records in the garage where there is no a/c...the records have survived 7 summers with no ill effects. I still enjoy my 50 year old records with no warps or other ill effects.

Actually I want as much sunlight coming in on my collection as possible. Most of it is indirect however. Storing records in the dark can set up mildew and mold.
