Not sure why, but the mood struck me to spin EJ all day.

I have quite a few of his albums and am a fan. I really like Yellow Brick Road, Mad Man Across the Water, Tumbleweed Connection,
Honky Château, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player and others ...but today it occurred to me that Captain Fantastic and the Brown
Dirt Cowboy is my favorite Elton John LP.

On a different day I may pick another as my favorite ...but today Captain Fantastic was ...well ...pretty damn fantastic.

If you like EJ, what is your favorite album of his ?

Dean.

There are many more fine records from Sir Elton.

...at Madison Square Garden he played Madman Across The Water, Levon and Tiny Dancer one after the other. For me, that was the highlight of the night.

Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone were there ...so it was pretty much perfect.

My favorite is Madman Across the Water no contest. That, to me, is his masterpiece.

I like his early stuff and I do not have it but would like to score the live album 11/7/70.

A friend likes Yellow Brick road and have spun that frequently. It holds up and I like it.

Never really listened to him after that album and run to turn off bennie and the jets and that kind of stuff, BUT, his early stuff, GROOVY.

In college, before our soccer games, someone would play "Funeral for Friend" loudly out his dorm window...great beginning to the game.

then there's the period when Bernie Taupin started collaborating with him again. I give up ... don't have a favorite.

I also ike Captain Fantastic. All the songs are, well, fantastic. It has that great mid 70s combination of acoustic piano guitar, drums and electric instruments. It is also a quality dynamic analog recording, unlike most of the junk made today. Just listen to the way the drums kick in on the title track.

Love, love this LP. Might also be my fave.. but so hard to choose (nt) , posted on February 12, 2017 at 18:35:53

[Uni/MCA 1971] really comes across as a vibrant, heartfelt performance. Good remote recording. Decent pressing from MCA- I've never had any problem with their sonics , compressed pop-sound such as it is ....or with their being a music-business arm of the Mafia.

usually since I saw him on that tour and loved it.

Honky Chateau frequently.

11-12- 70 for it's honesty and just plain great playing.

Here and There has some sterling moments.

That's the advantage of audio over video...
I have Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,
but I just prefer his early stuff, Costumes notwithstanding.

RE: I always liked that first album...., posted on February 13, 2017 at 23:21:46
Border song, Take me To The Pilot,
I have one with the Uni label and another has the later MCA label. Both good pressings.

I recall listening to Tumbleweed Connection early seventies. Madman, Don't Shoot Me. Lots of EJ radio hits always playing as part of the musical backdrop. Up until,...what? Late seventies and then EJ sort of retires. And, waiting in the wings was Billy Joel with that song called "Piano Man"...and a string of others to follow it.

Radio. What was playing on the radio. That's what most of us listened to. Do they still do that?

I seem to follow the treads leaning toward EJ's work PRE GBYBR. After that, my interest
Is zero.
While I'm not big on live albums, his 11-17-70, recorded in New York, is great.
I picked up a sealed copy not long ago during a bin diving excercise.

neither the Uni nor the MCA can hold a candle to the DJM pressings of EJ early works. Captain Fantastic in a DJM pressing is so damned good. I love EJ so much my kids hate him, though they do love Bennie & the Jets.

DJM. That's a label I haven't seen in my meanderings.
I'm not surprised that that will be the preferred label for collectors.
Thanks for the tip. I'll keep a lookout.
