I saw this listed as "coming" on the Elusive Disc web set.....this is not something I expected to see. Not cheap at $125, though. Still, remarkable that it is coming out at all. My admiration for Klemperer is high, although certainly not at the "I'm a huge fan" level. Certain of his recordings are absolute classics - the Brahms Requiem, the Missa Solemnis, Fidelio - and others are not on the mark - his Bruckner 7th loses its way, his Magic Flute is too damn slow and old fashioned, not to mention the lack of dialog, etc. Peter Heyworth, though, in the two volume bio of Klemperer, His Life and Times, manages to make him into a microcosm of 20th century music, and in his own right a fascinating character. I would love to acquire this....although it might end up on that wish list currently inhabited by the Brahms/BPO direct to disc set..... |
