I'll be in San Francisco for a day next month and need recommendations on record shops. Which shops have the most classical vinyl these days? I'm hoping for places similar to Counterpoint in Hollywood or Sikora's in Vancouver--places where it takes a couple hours to go through the classical section. Thoughts?

Amoeba in SF and Berkeley, Rasputin in Berkeley, and there's a place in downtown Mill Valley that has a TON of records in a small space, although I can't recall the name. Mostly rock and jazz, though.

I haven't been to the Amoeba stores for awhile - the last time I visited the SF store, selection was down and prices were up.

I don't know of anything like Counterpoint in SF - I am a fan of Counterpoint as well, although their prices are high. I visit there when I am in the Hollywood area, which is about 3X per year. OTOH, I was very disappointed when I visited Amoeba in Hollywood, about a year ago - hardly anything worthwhile in the classical section.

I'll always hit up Amoeba and Grooves when I'm in town for business. While the former has a vast selection, the latter has more of the 'higher-end' stuff (Shaded Dogs, Mercs, Bluebacks) - if that's what you're after.

Neither disappoints overall.

Thx,
Paul

Amoeba Records on Haight between Shrader and Stanyan is very good, and IIRC - there is a Rasputin Recods across the street that is OK...
Jack's Records on the corner of Scott and Paige - if it is open - has some - and this shop is worth visiting - but not usually open....
