I have a very first world problem. I am in the market for a mid range preamp. My system is LP only with a EAT forte, morche DP8 and ortofonA90' tri phono TRV EQ3SE vtl2.5 plinius sa250 usher BE10. I have tube rolled the vtl with RTF 12au7s . The sound of my system is fast, dynamic and detailed. I have short listed the VAC renaissance and the Ayon Auris. One is 12AX7 and the other a 6H30 tube preamp. Any asylum inmates have any experience with either? I have recently listened also to the VTL 5.5 sig mk2 but kind of flet it wasnt much better than my modded 2.5

I run a VAC preamp (Phi Beta) with a Plinius amp (Galbo-modded SA-103) in a vinyl-based system and they sound terrific together. But the Renaissance series of VAC preamps may not be the best choice for you. The output gain on those preamps is quite high--somewhere in the vicinity of 21 db, if memory serves--and the input gain on Plinius amps is also quite high (mine is 32 db single-ended and 38 db balanced). This combo of high-gain pieces may create a matching problem. If I were you, looking into VAC, I'd seek out either a Phi Beta or its successor, a Signature 2a, both of which are lower in gain at 12 db. At the very least, try to audition a Renaissance before you buy to see if you like the way it matches with your amp.

Good luck with your search.

Thanks willimusk. I have heard the low output imoedance kf the VAC renaissance can make it seem very high gain and problematic with the SA250. I run 1.5m of shunyata anaconda so may not be a huge issue. Hard to audition VAC renaissance in NZ though. ,out of i terest what did vince galbo do to your sa103? I heard hes the beesknees in plinius mods in the US

The $1,500 Ultra upgrade from Vince Galbo replaced all caps and resistors with a combination he's fine-tuned over many years, beefed up the power supply, and re-biased the optional class A/B operation deeper into class A. There's probably other stuff I'm not remembering. The amp went from good to outstanding, becoming more balanced through the frequencies and extended at both ends, with more suppleness, nuance, and micro-detail. Quieter, too.
