Fresh in from Oregon, USA; I have photos of Terry Alford's Thorens TD125. It is the first version and came in AB configuration with standard base for 9" tonearms. Terry has given the electronics a 'tune-up' (his words)and constructed the plinth you see from two species of solid Cherry. One specie of Cherry common to the US. The other specie is from Brazil and is the darker of the two hardwoods. Terry likes Cherry. So do I.
Additionally, those familiar with the TD125 will recognize that this new plinth is in a 'long base'configuration. The tonearm in use is a Jelco SA-750L (12")
The aluminum sub-chassis has been custom painted in automotive black by a friend of his who paints cars.

Lovely.. TD-127esque... I also have a cherry plinth for my 124.. BTW Steve, do you plan on producing bronze end caps with polymer thrust pads again?

Regards....

Hi fred76.
I think there are a few very good sources for the bronze end plates.
re: td124 bearing end caps and polymer thrust pads:

Two that come to mind are:
AudioSilete in Italy. his ebay store:
http://stores.ebay.com/AUDIOSILENTE

and

Jim Campbell still sells these using his ebay moniker jec965
http://www.ebay.com/usr/jec965
(select, copy & paste these web addresses into your browser address bar.)

Those two sellers offer this part at very competitive pricing. I'll let them have the market. Their products look fine to me.

This may sound stupid, but about two hears ago I spent some time in a hardwoods store looking for armboard wood for my Technics SL-1100. I went through all the exotic wood stacks tapping the various woods with my nuckles, until I found a wood that had a pleasing sound. That wood was cherry. I had the piece of cherry planed down to the proper thickness, and I hope to someday mount my heavily modified Rabco SL8 tonearm on the Technics/cherry armboard.

I agree that Cherry seems a good choice for armboard materials.
ime, Cherry is often warped and requires planing not only to size it but to straighten out the all-to-common warp. Apart from that added step and expense, Cherry is one of my choices.

That said, I also find that manufactured woods like particle board and MDF and those in-between also make a good choice and at lower expense. Example, mdf with Cherry veneer just might sound a tad better than the solid piece of Cherry. But there is a strong negative perception with regard to the above. Then again, it isn't always just about the sound, it can be about the aesthetics that adds to the pleasure.

Another thing; if you find that your solid hardwood armboard results in a sound somewhat lacking in bass....mdf will often times offer lots of bass.
my2c and ymmv, etc.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the links.. I mentioned your end caps 'cause yours looked like the business (the quality machining..) when I saw them on your site years ago.

Anyway, both Simone's and Jim's auctions look attractive.. Both seem to offer Teflon thrust pads, I wonder how they would hold up in the long term.. Jim has the advantage of offering a silicon nitride ball bearing. While Simone has an alternative Kydex thustpad thrown in plus an extra oil paper gasket. I wonder how Kydex compares to Teflon.

Thanks again Steve.

I think a saw a youtube video of Fremer interviewing Simone or his rep at the Munich audio show..

Regards....

Yes, Teflon thrust pad materials are too soft for this application. I use Delrin, Teflon infused Delrin or Torlon 4301. At least they have the bronze part of it.....and the gasket.

Yes, Steve.. I'd most likely get a couple of Torlon thrustpads from you when you get to have them in stock.. Thanks.
