$15 Klipsch KG-5 speakers. $50 Sony PS-X5 with Audio Technica cart, $15 Denon PMA-750. $20 for cables, connectors, etc.

I'm never spending big bucks on new shit again. This setup rivals (and maybe beats) my MMF-5, Outlaw RR 2150, combo costing easily over $2,000 without speakers especially if you factor in a new Goldring 1012 GX cart which alone costs almost $600.

This is the second Denon and Sony tables I have found lately in my garage sale/thrift store scrounges (it has been a great year). I jumped at the Denon after hearing another one I had repaired by a local shop (at a "staggering" total cost of $150 including repairs). This one sounds as good as the one I fixed and is in much better cosmetic shape. I will keep using it until it blows up, then repair it as well. I love the way these PMA-750 integrateds sound! The PS-5,6,7 Sony DD tables are unsung heroes! Built like tanks. Both I have found (one I paid gasp! $125 for and this one I got for a steal) work perfectly except the neon light is intermittent. I could care less.

Speakers are KG-5 that needed nothing. They don't sound as good as the Boston Acoustics A-70 speakers I got for $15 (plus $30 surround repair kit) but the SA-70 did not recieve Wife Approval. I agree they are very very ugly, but so pretty sounding. Especially with the Denon, which for they seem to have been made.

the biggest bang for your buck is used low end equipment. the jumps up from there are usually small and get smaller as you go up. BUT there comes a time when i must improve and that is when what i hear wrong is easy to discern.

the tightness that you add with going to ELAC B5s or even andrew jones' other bargain speaker design-the pioneer bs22, will definitely be within reason. etc as you go up.

i have been amazed at what can be accomplished for seemingly pennies and have created such in my own home. right now, you would have to pry my audio research sp3a1 from my cold dead fingers along with the adcom 555II 200wpc bargain amp.

hae fun with your adventure.

Having tons of fun. I especially like building "period correct" systems. Although the speakers are not correct here (90's I think..and the other two are '80s). But I don't care. Love it.

Man, I hear ya! Just replaced my big Denon with a Sony PSX-55 with my fine, old ADC XLMii. Great sound, total convenience, for around $300 all in. You have to live with "vintage" gear and accept it might have a limited life, so plan ahead. If I can find one I'll store a spare vintage Sony for future deployment.I have a 'spare' Sony CD player in storage.

Another good cheap brand to look out for is Onkyo., posted on June 28, 2016 at 02:53:48
Don't know about the turntables because I never had an Onkyo but their amps and receivers are excellent.

Absolutely. I have a spare Denon and a spare PS-X5. Snagging some better speakers is the next mission. Although since this is the dining room sound quality takes a backseat to wife approval. I was amazed she went for it at all.!

A $65 yard sale score from a few years ago. Luxman turntable, receiver and cassette deck. JBL speakers. About 50-60 Classic Rock LPs. The speakers needed to have woofers re-foamed, otherwise everything in good working order.

Looks like a PD-277 table and L-40 speakers ???

That should have sounded pretty good !

With the exception of a few cartridges and headphones, I stopped buying new gear long ago. I enjoy tag-sailing and hunting for old gear. I've brought so much stuff home from these hunts that I can't even remember it all.

This find was memorable ...

Thorens TD-124mkII, table
Ortofon RMG-212, arm
Ortofon SPU-GTE, cartridge
Tandberg 64X, reel to reel
ADS L780, speakers
ADS L-300, speakers, all for $75

That was a good day !

Enjoy your new system. I hope your wife gives in and lets you use the BA speakers, since you prefer them. I agree though, they aren't very handsome.

Dean.

Yeah, it didn't help that I dropped one and banged up all the corners. Something to be said for the dimensions of that box.

Went to the thrifts today, and like a prospector by a river...came up empty! Makes the rare finds all that much sweeter.

Just FYI...anyone that's as passionate about DVD players as we are about turntables is living in the golden age of thrift like we were in the late 80's early 90's. Literally dozens of dvd players gathering dust on the shelves. Even one pretty nice Pioneer Laser Disc player. I almost went for it, but then remembered I have three of them.

Listening to my Peter Gabriel 45 RPM remasters that cost more than the equipment.

Now THAT is where I want all my audio dollars to go. It's about the music.

That find almost approaches the unbelievable. And the price!! Unbelievable!, posted on June 29, 2016 at 01:09:18

As I have mentioned before, I am really enjoying my vintage Yamaha CR2020, the Hitachi HS-500 horn speakers, my Technics SL-1600 MKII, the Polk RM1000 subs, the Dahlquist crossover, and the NAD 2600A sub amp. The Thorens TD-160 on the right is waiting for dust cover hinge repair. However, I had to pay $1050 for all of the items above. The NAD was purchased new for $540 in the late 80s, and that raised the total price considerably.

I bought the 2020 back in the mid-90's at a pawn shop for something stupid like $10 (IIRC) as a second amp for my (then new) computer audio room.

I was given the NAD 2600 because one channel was blown out. The other channel worked fine and served duty in my Home Theatre (back in my "Past Life" with the ex-wife) driving a hybrid 4 ohm isobaric/ported 10" peerless DIY sub. It even served for one gig as a vocal monitor power amp!

I sold the 2020 many years later (and made a profit), while the ex got the 2600 (and all the HT gear). I came away with my Analog Rig and all my (and some of her!) records!

Ah, memories...

Yes, correct on both counts! The Luxman came equipped with an Osawa MP-15 in very nice working condition. It does sound very good, especially for the modest sum that it cost.
