For jazz, I am lucky to have the "Jazz at the Pawnshop" on Proprius label; Sweden pressing...fantastic sonics at a live venue

Great LP. Do you have an original Columbia from UK? I have a German issue and it sounds pretty good, have wondered about the UK version.

to hear it getting swept up seems equally surprising.

I don't have a reference record. Most of mine with good sonics, such as the Sheffield Lab direct-to-disc series leave me musically cold. I would rather listen to my scratched Robert Johnson LPs than Swedes playing Dixieland. But to each his own.

You've got to have a great sounder that you can name.

I'll be honest I don't have just one. I have about 12 and it depends on my mood to which I would use.

Easy Money, and all the rest too. It is the first thing I play after every tweak. I've owned my copy since it was first released.

I got it when I had an all-tube system and I wanted to listen to a record that had been recorded all-analog from start to finish. Very nice recording, but the music never really grew on me.

Every once in a while I give it another try, but I can't quite get into it.

My reference recordings are St. Germain Tourist, AC/DC Back in Black (the good pressing) and DSOTM.

Maybe not my best sounding recordings but 2 I often use with both music and sound that are very pleasing. I also like the Rickie Lee Jones that others have mentioned.

Pure old school:

Thelma Houston - I've Got the Music in Me (Direct to Disc)
Dave Grusin - Discovered Again (Direct to Disc)

Standard Pressings:

Angela Bofill Angie & Angel of the Night
Rita Coolidge - Nice Feelin'
Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun
The Brother's Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23/Get the Funk Out Ma Face (limited edition extended play)

Charlie Byrd - Crystal Clear Records (not thrilled with the material but one of the most phenomenal drum solos I have ever heard recorded)

Probably a few others as well...

Happy Listening!
DeeCee

Which vinyl do you have from Gil Evans is it a 180g 45RMP Analog Production or just the standard impulse lable 33 LP?

isn't too far behind IMO. When I see Lincoln Mayoraga LPs in the thrifts, I always mumble some disagreeable words.

The third Sheffield disc, tracks "America" and "Camarillo."

But there are a few others, too.
The title cut from Merle Haggard's Big City is truly a great recording in my opinion. The arrangement is spare and the mix is dynamic.
"Opus de Funk" from the AP reissue of Art Pepper + Eleven. Outstanding slam, from top to bottom and also great dynamics.

But I always come back to that Sheffield as the final word after any change in the system.

I use that same Janis Ian LP. Also have a Colin Walcot LP I like to use. Can't remember the title as it's lost in the stash.

The MoFi UHQR pressing of Crime of the Century (MFQR 1-005) is very very good and once upon a time, was my best pressing. If its a Beatles fan, the MoFi UHQR of Sgt Peppers leaves a Beatles fan impressed.

I have purchased a lot of 45 RPM pressings over the last 10 years. The new MoFi of Rickie Lee Jones cut at 45 RPM is very very good and has a slight edge over the original MoFi of RLJ. The 45RPM has the openness that 45RPM brings to a pressing but the original 33RPM MoFi was pressed on super vinyl and is a quieter pressing.

MoFi's 45RPM pressing of Billy Joel - An Innocent Man is impressive and can rock the plaster off your walls (or sheetrock). The Analogue Productions pressing of Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping is very good. The Classic Records pressing of Led Zeppelin's first LP is also very good.

I'm happy to say that there are plenty to choose from.

Ed
