Wonder why high end turntables cost so much today. This started it all

This turntable came out about 1980 $10.000.00

so they are staying ahead of the curve.

Hell, probably costs 10 grand for shipping and set-up.

THEN you have to buy a cartridge...

Before 'they' discovered they could sell just as many top of the line devices of any audio sort by nearly all major companies.. at four to ten times the previous price... And started doing so.
The change happened around 1984 to 1986 or so..

At the time it was incredibly expensive. For comparison in 1980 a Linn LP12 was under $1K. The Goldmund was significantly more expensive than the average cost of a new car.

But that is way out of date.

There is a current Goldmund TT available for those 1%'ers out there. I'm not sure if it has the 'spin as you suck' option for cleaner sound, tho.

Never got to hear the Goldmund, but have heard the Walker Audio Proscenium Gold Reference a few times. Yummy!

Goldmund? Hmmm!

Aren't they the Swiss guys who put a stock (Japanese?) CD player inside one of their fancy aluminium cases and jacked up the price ten-fold?

Just curious.

"Goldmund Eidos 18D Multichannel SACD/DVD-A player is now available in the U.S. market at a suggested list price of $8,900"

It was a Pioneer DV-300 with a few dollars worth of mods and of course put in a fancy metal chassis.

I wish I had read this 5 years ago. I love it that they called out Lexicon on this scam. And glad I never spent any long green on those products.

And sadder than ever that B&K is gone.

I once was taken to see a set of Wilson Wamms in a living room that the man's wife had bought him for a birthday present. The turntable in the room was a Goldmund.

I saw this at Jeff's Sound Values and it was crazy looking table. Looked like it weighed over 100lbs. I never got to hear it but Jeff said it sound good but not jaw dropping good.

Can't comment on the Walker, but I had a chance to audition the Goldmund back then at a high-end shop in Munich and was rather underwhelmed, as it didn't really sound much better to me than the TD160Super plus Grace G707 plus Yamaha MC505 combo I had at that time. What really cracked me up, though, was when the sales guy told me, that their exemplar would have a tendency not to properly start up, when the weather outside was moist - and I thought: "Just like a Ferrari..." ;)

Greetings from Munich!

It was really the Thorens Reference which started it all. The Goldmund Reference was their answer for the ultimate table.
Any table can be set up improperly, and the linear arm was more likely than not, misaligned. The table itself is a great platform with a 35 lb. belt driven platter with excellent speed stability. That's the key to the table's greatness. It didn't sound thick or ponderous (lacking PRaT) like many other heavy plattered belt drives.

My business partner in the '80s had one. He devised a set up jig for the arm which helped, but ultimately it was the arm that was the limiting factor. Still, properly set up, it was pretty damn good. I don't think there was anything out there in '80 which could beat it. Might be an interesting comparison with a Walker if they both had the same arm.

Yes, Goldmund did that; however, the Reference TT is really a magnificent beast! I have seen one in a shop in Germany and I definitely think it can still hold it's own in the no-holds-barred arena today. Maybe it was not ever the top of the top but it is definitely a good'un.

The much simpler, and more affordable, Goldmund Studio direct drive TT (the Ref is a belt drive) was also extremely capable.

These products were cutting edge in their time and still very good today...a bit like the top Japanese direct drives from the 70s and 80s.

according to the CPI calculator, $10,000 had the same buying power 1980 as $28,000 does in 2016.
