No. Not preparing for Valentine's day. I understand what knots to try using thread drive on my VPI HW-19 with SAMA, but not exactly what the best strategies are to get the knot tied easily. I have maybe 1/4", a limited amount of space, in which I can adjust for length by moving the motor.

My assumption is that pulling most of these knots tight makes the thread "belt" bigger (I'm using #4 silk thread). Any other observations?

Some questions:
1)Do you measure the existing belt and the thread length and mark the thread?
2)Do you tie the knot on the TT and motor spindle or, wrap it around something else that you're using as a template and then install it on the TT platter?
3) Does an extra set of hands help (my wife has reluctantly volunteered if needed).
4) How much practice, how many times does it take, before you are successful/proficient?

I do have a Phoenix Engineering motor controller and Roadrunner so I'm thinking TT speed issues won't be a problem. I understand that I don't want the thread too tight and that there may be some slippage on start up.

Anything else?

Many Thanks, Barry

I used the belt as a template. When you finish successfully it may appear a bit loose compared to the original. One helper is to spray or soak in a sticky liquid. Auto belt dressing might be used or a spray adhesive. Don't worry about the knot; it should stay on the outside and not be a factor.

I can see why some people like the sonics, but I'm not sure about the trade offs. The speed stability with silk thread is erratic, but I can probably fix that. I'm not loosing anything at all with the stock clear VPI belt on speed stability with my HW19. So much for the theory that rubber belts are unstable.

Sound wise the whole frequency range shifts towards more emphasis on upper mid range and highs. The is a certain level of apparent clarity that results that is appealing. A less dark sound. However, lowest bass, which was good before, is completely gone with #4 silk thread. I can probably lower the VTA, but not enough to get it all the bass back and recover the impact. Not sure if this thread drive is worthwhile.

Has anyone tried the newer black VPI belt versus the older clear one? Any other material? I have a black belt and will give it a try.

Teres 255 table with the teres pulley motor and I like how it transformed my tables sound. Everything is clearer and the soundstage is deeper. I switch Back to the Silk thread and it sounded slightly more midrange but clear and yes, the bass was reduced. I switched back to the VPI belt and I was back in heaven.

In my system the VPI clear belt sounds best and I don't have to worry anymore about the knot making noise as it goes around the pulley. So that's what I will use for now on!
