Fairchild 440 turntable. I need another turntable like a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but the price was right. Not a very good design, you can feel the motor vibration but it'll be fun to mess around with. Any ideas on what tonearm that is?

Wow. I've never seen a straight tonearm with an offset bayonet headshell lock before.

Are you new to vinyl? SME has made tonearms like this for many years. It's not the best design, though. It's better to have the vertical bearings offset to the same angle as the headshell in order to prevent azimuth from changing as the arm moves up and down.

Nope, I'm not new to vinyl and, nope, I've never seen that before. I've only seen things that I would consider hybrids, not true bayonet mounts, on straight tonearms.

But let's all just conveniently forget about the original question: What tonearm is mounted on the Fairchild turntable? The answer isn't: Am I new to vinyl? My answer: I don't know what tonearm is mounted on the turntable.

Your turn.

I first thought it was Rek-O-Kut, but it's a bit different at the pivot. Maybe some sort of Alphason or Grace?

It might be an old AR, they look real close!

Mmmm. My Dad had that turntable. I'm gonna say no to that one, but it's a good guess.

No reason to be sarcastic even if he is new to vinyl. Rephrase your statements in the future.

That's funny. You'd think a guy who apparently knew so much about tonearms would want to offer a guess about what this one was. Yet he appears to have moved on.

if you still haven't figured out the arm, maybe email Win (Mosin) he is the guy around here most likely to know (he probably owns a couple).

It had no headshell and cartridge when I got it but I subbed another one in and got sound in both channels with no hum. WOOHOO!
Opened up old General Industries "black deathbox" motor and cleaned bearings and re-oiled.
Decided to just rebuild stock with a few small tweaks.
Will post pics when done.
