About a month ago I picked up about 40 mainly jazz with a few blues lp's amongst them. In the lot I found 3 Junior Mance lps which I am finally getting around to playing. If they are all as good as "Straight Ahead" then I am in for a great ride as this lp hss my foot tapping to the point of dropping off. Must look for more.
The other two are "Get Ready, Set, Jump!!! and "For Dancers Only" with Martin Rivera.

He recorded with Cannonball, and wrote great tunes for the Quintet. nt, posted on July 3, 2015 at 08:12:56

Junior recorded a few albums on Beehive out of Chicago. I had the great pleasure of working with Jim Neumann, proprietor of Beehive, more than 15 years ago in a different walk of our lives unrelated to jazz. Jim gave me a Beehive unreleased sampler on red vinyl with a few Junior cuts, and then, a couple of his albums a couple-few years later. Great artist is Junior, and a great person/friend/colleague is Jim. Never been disappointed with any Beehive record I've managed to find over the years. Check them out.

I don't know why he never had the kind of popularity some of his contemporaries did. The first time I heard him (WRTI in Philadelphia - I still remember exactly where I was stuck in traffic on the Schuylkill) I made a mental note to seek out this guy's work.

Enjoy!

But I always thought, without lifting a finger to do any research, that Beehive was somehow a "budget" derivative of Bethlehem, which are also great LPs. For example, Johnny Hartman recorded on both labels, as did a few others, maybe also Chris Connor.
