Thanks for posting that. I need that picture for my stereo room. I have many pictures of Lady Day, but I had never seen that picture of her and Mister with a record and player.

I've not read enough about her to know what kind of dog she had but this appears to be a Boxer to me.

"Originally included in a 1949 cover story for Ebony magazine, this photograph shows Holiday at home in her Harlem apartment cooking a steak with her beloved boxer, Mister. The article, titled "I'm Cured for Good," came after numerous incidents with the law due to Holiday's ongoing struggle with narcotics. This was the first time Leonard had ever met the singer. "On arriving, I was greeted by a woman in an apron and housedress," recalled Leonard, "whom I initially mistook for the maid, until I realized she was the great Billie Holiday." -Photographer Herman Leonard"

Wow! You did it again! Another Lady Day picture I had never seen before. I need to have this one as well. Maybe in my coffee bar portion of the kitchen.

Apparently the photographer agrees with me. Mister is a boxer. I wonder if the steak was for him.

If this picture and the one with Lady Day holding the record are not copyrighted can you provide a link to them. I may just take them to Costco and get canvas prints.

Thanks,

Phil

Just Googled "Billie Holiday," and all these pictures popped up under "images.", posted on July 1, 2015 at 19:58:29

That shot is by Herman Leonard but I have never seen it in any of his books.

He's one of the best and most famous of the (in particular) jazz photographers, so I would
imagine the copyright is solid, but you'll need to research that.

Happy you enjoyed those pix!!!!
