I'm interested in some inexpensive shelving units that I can use to store my vinyl records in since they currently are on the floor leaning against the wall. Thanks for advice on a product.

The best value that I know of is the Ikea Kallax.
Records fit perfectly and you can display an LP in each opening should you desire to.
The trick is having an Ikea in your area. I believe they can be shipped for a "Price".

Also, Look at the IKEA EXPEDIT series of shelves. However, anything bigger than a 2X2 unit should have backing or bracing added to the back to prevent the tendency to rack over side ways if loaded with too much weight.

Do you have an unfinished Wood Furniture store nearby? Sometimes they have cabinets that will serve for what you need.

EXPEDIT is discontinued, but there are clones of it out there. -nt, posted on May 3, 2015 at 18:56:08

While the Ikea Expedit has been discontinued for some time, the Kallax, which takes its place, seems from the reports I've heard/read should be a worthy successor.

My only problem is that I only have ONE Expedit in black/wood color (which I predict may be full up in within the next year or two), and the Kallax appears to only be available in white or birch finish... Darn!

Hi Dman,

I have an Expedit in the black/brown, and recently purchased a Kallax in the same color. The match is excellent - I have them on opposite walls of a small room and they appear to match perfectly.

From the link someone kindly supplied, Kallax in black/brown appears to be alive and well.

Thanks for the link. As soon as I get back from my vacation I'm going to get one of the bigger ones. I only have around 800 albums so they should fit nicely.

Do the inserts with the door fit albums as well?, posted on May 5, 2015 at 09:26:12

I have a bit of a dust problem and the doors would greatly reduce this.

Thanks for pointing that out to me..., posted on May 5, 2015 at 09:51:45

Didn't see it in that color on the 'site (but then again, being at work, I'm not really in "Ikea-mode" either! LOL)...

I have a 2X4 expidit and the doors work fine although, it may take about 6 or 7 records less

That's fine by me, thanks a lot.nt, posted on May 5, 2015 at 19:07:13

The interior space-and construction- of the KALLAX is identical to the EXPEDIT,
the only difference is the outer panels are not quite as thick, and the edges are very slightly rounded. IKEA made this change as it requires less wood. IKEA is the largest buyer of wood in the world. It saves them money, and they can spin it so they appear more "green".
Incidentally, IKEA has re-introduced the 5X5 KALLAX to the US market. Each "cubicle" will hold around 65 LPs, so, a 5X5 KALLAX will hold around 1625 LPs.
You'll need at least four or five of these for a half-decent collection...
If you don't live near an IKEA, you can order from the website, but they'll charge you up the wazoo..
