New stylus or new cart?

Turntable is an unmolested AR XA. Current cart is an equally stock Shure V15 Type II. The dilemma: upgrade the V15 with the Jico SAS stylus or replace with Shure M97XE and pocket a good deal of $. Obviously, I'm stuck on Shure, which is what I think the AR wants.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The V15 ll is long in the tooth being about 50 years old. I think you are better off getting a new M97XE. If you decide to get the new stylus the cartridge is still 50 years old !

I think only you can make this choice dependent on music and listening style.

Personally on the same table & arm, a Shure 91ED and original stylus just had more boogie factor than my other tables. For rock this was a no brainer.

The SAS stylus pulls more detail, almost 3D, very involving & musical. I went with the 91ED with SAS. I tend to Roxy Music, Steely Dan, some piano etc. Deciding factor was Paul Simon Graceland album. Drums just exploded out.

+1 for the M91ED, IMHO the very best cart for rock on the XA. /nt\, posted on May 3, 2015 at 08:20:26

is the way i would go. what an upgrade! ultimately less expensive than the other choices which would be an experiment.

I recently put a new stylus on my ancient ADC 10E Mark IV and I'm amazed what a superb sounding/tracking this cart is today.
In my own opinion, Newer isn't always better!
