Here are some pics of the unpacking of the Onkyo CP-1050

First Impressions:
- Packing is VERY GOOD. Thick and well protected for safe shipping
- Unit itself is very well made. Does not feel nor look cheep or clunky
- All arm bearing parts are black-painted metal
- Armrest and lock are plastic (but so are the ones on the Pro-Ject and Rega tables, right)
- Platter seems a tad light to be honest, has a nice frosted finish...not diamond-cut or polished
- Platter Matt is a nice, medium density smooth surface affair with no grooves, has a dished-out center
- Supplied with a cheep AT cart on typical Technics-style headshell. Didn't even unpack it
- Supplied with a nice Alloy 45 RPM puck
- Minimal owners manual and warranty registration sheet
- Detachable audio cable w/ integral ground wire (run-of-the-mill)
- Detachable power cable (run-of-the-mill)

Some things that DO NOT come with the table that should have:
- no stylus overhang tool or jig
- no mention anywhere in the manual about proper stylus overhang

If you do not have alignment tools, you would be better off to purchase one of the Jico-made upgrade styli for this cartridge. There are a couple, even a Shibata version if you do not want to mess around with changing the cartridge...but I would HIGHLY advise upgrading the stylus from the clunky one that is supplied. I am using an Ortofon 2M Bronze.

I went with an LP Gear HD Headshell which weighs in at just 9 grams and is ideal for the Ortofon 2M Bronze which is a tad heavy by itself. I used my trusty Dennesen Soundtraktor to setup the cartridge. This tool uses Bearwald geometry and placed the cart all the way forward in the headshell and canted inward about 1mm.

That's it for now, will do some initial listening tomorrow evening...

Stay tuned... … … … …

Well, as much as I wanted to believe that this turntable was going to be a great deal...it turned out to be a BUST. the Platter has excessive wobble and the Tonearm bearings are so loose that the arm chatters when you move it...

Highly NOT worth the 2 month wait I'm sorry to say :-(

Hi Joey,

Did you return the Onkyo? A shame that it was not what you were expecting. Perhaps a replacement would not exhibit said defects.

Otherwise, the consensus seems pleased with the new Pioneer direct-drive. Have you considered it instead?

Regards,

Alan
