peteSF	IMO:"Hippies, beatniks, punks, and skins" as the saying goes, were all some sort of outsider movement/art/social group. Real sub-cultures, until they were widely approved. The hipster thing is just a bunch of younger people dressing exactly the same without any sort of unifying artistic or social output. I'm not sure the hipsters are providing anything other than tight pegged pants. p

Your comment "...without any sort of unifying artistic or social output" is what society used to say of hippies and punks. I think it's more about the younger generation distancing themselves from the perceived trappings of their parents generation. I think those tight pegged pants are an analogy to flares and bell-bottoms, and are representive of their aversion to L.L. Bean and Lands' End chinos, Goretex, and Darn Tough socks. :-)
