In the meantime until I can get a good table...

I have been given some great alternatives for a good turntable within my budget. I just recently hooked up my Luxman P-405 with Grado XF3 cart. It sounds okay with the Exposure XV amp. I will admit that in the past I have had turntables that were just okay with receivers that had okay phono stage. But with the Exposure's phono stage I'm very surprised. I finally hear what I could never hear in my LPs. I hear what everyone else has heard in albums but I know I am definitely missing a lot of sonics and nuances with this table. It also helps that I set the cartridge up right according to Luxman and Grado spec. All thanks to vinylengine (great website!). Still in the market for a good table but will be a while, need to set aside some cash. But in the meantime I will be listening to my more common LPs that are easy to buy or are a dime a dozen on this table.

I found the Rega P3 or Planar 3 to be an ideal choice. I'd go as far as a Dynavector 20xl in such a system - you'll need the MC phono section. Even better are the Dynavector P75 or Exposure Dual Reg XIII - which IMO are great additions to the XV and really convenient when it comes to moving up the line. Heck with an OL Silver or even RB600 the P3 (on a good platform) works great in even more enlightened systems.

I loved every minute of the time I spent with the XV. What a wonderful and enjoyable piece of audio equipment. It's a great "forever" system if you want it to be but it lends itself to a real nice, easy and rewarding upgrade path.

I've got two vintage Exposure systems and still can't get over the musical quality they offer for the money. Nothings for everybody but if it's for you you'll be hard pressed ever to find equipment you like as much at anywhere near the price.

i was in the market for a 'better' table. I ran across a B&O RX2, updated from Paragon Audio. Initially came with entry mmc5 cart but, swapped at no charge to a mmc2 as agreed in the sale. I was expecting a lateral move at best. Oh no, I now have a 'better' table and no interest in looking to spend cash down the 'path'.

I have a B&O Beogram 5500 table in my audio collection in the spare room. Needs new belts but if I wanted to upgrade the MMC5 cartridge for that table it would cost between $250-1600 depending on which cart I went with. I had read numerous reviews about this table and a lot of users felt it was a waste of money to sink into a turntable that you can't use different carts with or just replace the stylus.

B&O cartridges are very good, but not cheap in their current integration from Soundsmith. You still have to decide for yourself, but I don't think the decision is so cut and dry given the high quality of the cartridges.

Don't listen to the tweakers. I've used Grado wood, Grace, etc and the mmc2 will compete with most high end carts.

You can send your MMC series cart to Germany for retipping, prices very reasonable.
Axel gets good recommendations from other forums. I have the original MMC4 cart from my TX2 (currently using a Soundsmith SMMC4) and might ship it off for the Shibata upgrade (about $250.00).
