A few weeks back there was a thread on the Dual 1019.
I talked about nuking the changer mechanism and just using the turntable mechanism which is 4 speed, rock steady, and really quiet.
I had one waiting in the shed so I thought I'd share what I'd done because a few folks expressed interest.
I'm now figuring out the cutout for a 4 or 5 layer birch-ply plinth.
Notice how setting the speed change lever halfway between speeds dis-engages the idler from the drive hub.

Keep us posted on your progress. I have a 1019 that I someday intend to redo as you are.

So you can see how much was eliminated.
Compare to yours or an ebay pic.

I discovered that I eliminated a long curved arm that controlled on/off plus and idler wheel tension spring.
I was glad to get rid of the long curved arm as it would vibrate, so here is what I came up with for the idler tension spring.
As the plinth comes together, I'll post more pics.

Yes, I'll be following this project as well. I have a couple Duals out in the shop and I've often thought about just stripping out the platter & motor and building something unique.

I've admired all of your posts and projects for several years.
If I can do something that's actually useful to you, I'm honored.
I hit on using the Dual 1019 because of Mosin (of Saskia TT fame)years
ago saying that the 1019 was by far the best Dual.
This will be the fourth one of these I've done.
Garage and table saw time will be limited for a while longer because
it gets to be about 110 degrees in my garage in Texas.

Good Stuff. I'll be watching. I just setup a 1019 for my office system with a Denon DL-110. Very respectable TT IMO.

The temps will fall to a manageable level just by replacing your garage doors with really good insulated ones. I recommend the R16 Clopay ones with triple pane glass. It was the best money I ever spent. Right now, it is 91F/33C outside, and 76F/24C in my garage.

Hey, you listened to me about the Dual. ;)

Something to be said for insulation. My 1500 square foot shop building has spray foam insulation on the interior and it stays 10-20 degrees cooler in summer and warmer in winter compared to outside temperatures.

I just went out in the shop to look at a freebie 'basket case' Dual that was tossed in along with a large record collection I bought 11 months ago. Sure enough, it's a 1019 model.

Pretty rough overall. The previous owner monkeyed around with the tonearm wires and got them all screwed up. I guess he didn't know how to correct the likely problem, corroded or dirty contacts on the headshell sled. I do have the sled for this along with a Stanton 500 which looks to be in serviceable condition.

The platter rotates when turned on but all the controls are stiff and jammed up. It looks like it needs a complete tear down and servicing.

Just scored this Dual 1019 in a thrift. It's been a bit of a headache but when it works, it outperforms even my fully modded Lenco L75/Decca Int./Shure M97. Despite its 27 cm platter, the 8 inch tone arm and the excess of auto mechanics. That motor is impressive indeed. Can you put up more photos or do you have a blog about the project?

Greetings Freek.

Wow, that's high praise indeed. In what way does the 1019 outperforms the Lenco?

Figured out opening to cut with jigsaw to clear everything.
Unfortunately, the circular section of the metal deck hangs down 1/16" lower than the edges of the deck.
Decision time: have a gap at the edge of the top deck and fill with some kind of spacer OR use my router to cut a circular recess.
I chose the second option.
Now everything will sit nice and flush and the metal deck can be securely screwed to the plinth, even the circular portion.
Probably dynamat underneath the metal deck also.
The extra material on the right could be used for a longer tonearm but
I'll probably remove it since I'm planning on using an ESL arm I have.
Now to trace the opening for the additional layers.
I'll do that tomorrow.

Wow, that looks like a real boat anchor. Good luck. nt, posted on August 20, 2014 at 15:03:57

In response to Ejman: the Lenco still rules in the bass department, bass guitar and bass drum sound heavy. Timing is OK. But with the 1019 in its place in my big system, i hear lots of little details in classical orchestras. Big deep and wide stereo image, almost holographical. Bass and bass drum can be distinguished from each other. Excellent timing.

The 1019 is amazingly quiet. I damped the plinth on the inside with bitumen tape. 3 solid brass spikes under the plinth. It's less sensitive to footfalls now. The Lenco L75 is a simple manual TT, no excess of mechanics like the 1019. The 1019 has an 8 inch tone arm which is a bitch to set up. VTA is way bum up so i added an extra rubber mat. The 1019 is more rare than a Lenco here in Holland and the prices are getting up. On the Lenco too. So I'm going to leave it original.

Greetings Freek.

Thanks Freek. I'm really interested in doing the conversion that the OP is talking about. I have an L75 with the Decca Intl tonearm as you do and now I'm really interested in doing the 1019 and see what comes of that. The problem with the 1019 however is that damn cartridge sled that's prone to hum and intermittent connection.
