wasn't planning to, but Neil Young's "A Letter Home" was quietly released today. Friends at AmoebaSF set a copy aside for me after they received 35 copies sent (not ordered) by TMR along with an invoice. Otherwise I had no intention of buying any new releases at the jam packed store today. This is a pretty amazing recording. VERY lo-fi, very emotional and heart-felt. If you don't like Neil Young you will hate it. IF you like Neil Young you may hate it. I love it, but man, he SURE didn't do the Ponomusic thing for this type of recording quality. It's raw and of a specific time frame and it plays in MONO sepia tones, with splashes of black and white, creaking, ticking, groaning and smelling of old, dry pinewood while Mr. Young sings some beautiful covers of songs that fit him well and which he treats with the utmost respect. Sonically & conceptually it's a solo LP the opposite of "Le Noise", which I also love. Kudos to Mr. Young, Jack White and Third Man Records for this brave release!
