Ross -
That Fisher FM200 (mono) is a rare bird - I have one too. Incredible tuner. I think it is the mono version of the FM1000. NOT the mono version of the FM200B. DO you are anyone else have any marketing stuff on the FM200? I never saw ads for it listed anywhere, including Fisher Docs book and Charlies K. (Vintage Spotters Guides) material.

All it know is it is incredibly sensitive and super sounding. I'm kind of a tuner nut, here's my vintage Tuner List. I also like the Sherwoods, these are a steal. They are the only vintage ones I've seen with tubes diodes in the discriminator (detector), making the early ones truly 100% tube. The later ones had diodes in the PS.

Tube -
Sherwood - 3000, 3000MKII, 3000MKIII, 3000MKIV
Fisher - FM90x, 101R, KM60, FM200, FM200B
HK - Citation III
Scott - 314, 350B, 310D, MPX adapter

Solid State -
Sansui TU717, TU9900
Kenwood - KT8005, KT8300, KT815
Sony - 5000W (1968)
Pioneer - TX9800

Hello, Keep in mind that because I am a college student with little or no money and time, most of my stuff is in the process of being fixed up from rather sorry condition!

Amplifiers:

2 RCA MI-4288L PP parallel 6L6 amps
1 General Electric 4BA14 6V6 studio monitor amp (do not know much about this one)
2 Bogen MO-60 PA amps (need work, with 7027A outputs)
2 Hammond 6V6 organ amps
1 Musical Concepts mod Hafler DH-220

Preamps:

1 Heathkit dual-mono preamp, (forget model)
1 Bogen MXM tube mixer (sounds really nice for an old Piece of PA gear)

Turntable:

Original AR-XA (approx 1967, old style tonearm)

Speakers:

Pair Altec 816 horn cabinets with 511b/802 HF horns and JBL 2220A woofers.
Single AR3 (not "AR3a", utility plywood finish instead of walnut)

Other miscellaneous tube junk too numerous to mention

Thanks, Doug Eisemann

I've been downsizing recently, but here's the current collection:

Tannoy GRF corner horns with Monitor Golds
Quad ESL 57's (actually I just sold these to a friend)
Leak Troughline II FM tuner
Quad AM tuner
Original Sequerra Model 1 FM tuner
Revox G36 reel-to-reel
Quad II amps
SME 3012, Grace 707 and Alphason tonearms
Commonwealth Electronics idler drive transcription turntable
Various Leak and Quad preamps, Pioneer and other Japanese receivers

Not much USA made audio was ever imported into Oz, hence the "British" flavour of my collection.

Daily use:
Marantz 1150 integrated amp
Marantz 125 tuner
Rega Planar 2 w/RB250 arm and unknown Denon cart
Tandberg TCD-330 cassette
Sound Dynamics ? Speakers w/12" yellow foam woofers
Space-Tech Labs modified Sound Dynamics bookshelf speakers
(*note to you audio nuts in Vancouver--Space-Tech is a small store that specializes in tube audio; the owner, Albert Leung, is a qualified audio engineer who designs and builds his own tube Pre and Power amps, crossovers, DACs, etc. as well as a good selection of used and vintage equipment)

Also:
Pioneer SM-83 integrated tube amp (6BQ5's)
Empire 698 turntable w/empire cart
Fisher CSS 44 speakers
Teac A-6300 reel to reel
Teac A-450 cassette
Teac 450 cassette
Fisher 634 Quad receiver (HUGE but useless to me as I have no quad equipment or music....anyone interested?)

Working on:
Teac AS-200 integrated amp
Akai AA-5800 integrated amp

Negotiating to acquire:
Marantz 1250
Marantz 120 (2)
Marantz 2325
Linn Sondek

and still the search continues....

All the best to the Vintage Addicts out there!

Teac 4070G R2R
Teac A-1500w R2R
Sony TC-650 R2R (2)

Large Advents recently refoamed

To Ross & All Audio Asylum Vintagites! A Question:

Just saw my Son's speakers this weekend over at U.C. Davis and they are Heath AS-10 with cane grills and the back terminal section looks like some older classic AR thing - 1 - 2 -T with bar wire between 2 & T and one pot. Anybody have any idea what these might be?? He only paid $15/pr.

Tough to pick a favorite, but I would probably say the best SOUNDING are the Lafayette 550, and the Scott 240 and 280 mono blocks. At least that's what I'm thinking right now. The Scotts are real sleepers in the vintage ranks, but are rather hard to find. I am still looking for a pair of 232's, which must have been made in VERY small numbers.

Was this a frame off restoration or just an upgrade?

Is this a misprint? 17 months?! Wait 1 month more and you could have 2 children.

Actually, I tried to speak with him a few times and never get an answer. I'm looking for a set of the brass caps or knob sets. I was thinking about a rebuild (caps and resistors) or possibly a frame off restoration. I'm not sure I could be either patient enough or live without my 500-C that long. Maybe I need to get a second unit.

Just beautiful. Love those double-ganged brass knobs. But my first love is a Fisher X100B because that's what we had when I was a kid.
Plus a Weathers table with wood tonearm (simply beautiful, and great sound too.)

Sometimes I wonder how much progress has been made, because I remember how sweet that old system sounded. Modern stuff is all edges, the older stuff is mostly surfaces. Modern tubes like C-Js (I own an MV-50) sound tizzy compared to the sixties stuff.

A vintage collection that never meant to be one (and will soon be supplemented by a real vintage collection! Not to offend anyone, but to my mind vintage implies either the tube era or solid state stuff from the last gasp of the tube era. -Though I suppose early audiophile stuff might count.)

db systems db1 preamp (ok, so I had the upgrades done and it's a 1b)
carver m-400t power amp (no snide comments. actually these things are fetching nice prices on ebay.)
carver sonic hologram generator
phillips 212 turntable
jim rodgers jr-149 loudspeakers (still competitive with the best mini's but look horrible without their long-ago-distintegrated black sytrofoam grill coverings)
fisher speakers (my first true vintage purchase) dk what model# yet but they are 2-ways with the very homey looking 2-tone grill cloths that could do service as throw-rugs in a pinch.

just my 1 cent.

I think this model was in production for quite a while. I had a pair of 110s circa 1975, but I think the 100s were the better design. I remember listening to a pair in a store, and liking them very much. And I think they began life around 1970 or even earlier(?)

Hi,
Insightful description.I think it extends to front end as well.My Scott tuners are somehow more satisfying to listen to(warts and all)than about 60% of my CD's.
Incidentally,I recapped one of my 299b's,and replaced some resistors, and went to under chassis electrolytics(modern values). Also dropped the voltages with a 500ohm 10w resistor off the 5AR4 to bring down plate and grid.NOS EL84m,etc.This amp now sounds horrible.I'm going backwards to see where I screwed up.

The Doc is supposed to have reproduced the caps and knobs. I see the same comment and once in a while someone notes he acquired a set. For my 500-C a complete set is supposed to be in the range of about $35. I really am not all that concerned. Knobs don't improve sound (Hmm interesting thought, I wonder if you change the harmonics of a volume control shaft, will the sound change?)

Mine had 1 missing when I bought it and over the years has lost 2 more. I really love the sound of the 500-C and others I know love the 400. Their tuners and integrated amps were some of the better made in their day and well worth acquiring and using even today. GO FOR IT.

High Brian,

My Fisher is broken. My uncle gave it to me and he preferred
the Marantz 20b over it. The TFM1000 has a funky circuit where the
stereo indicator light goes out and takes a bunch of other stuff with it. That's what's wrong with mine.

I hope to restore it someday, but it's low on priorities right now.

Hello Paul,

My 20b's are my babies! I don't plan on selling them ever. They sound
excellent. No transistor harshness, and really quiet.

I wish u luck finding one. It's worth the trouble and the bucks. I think they go for around $400.00 now. Well worth it compared to the troublesome 10b going for $1500.00 US +.

'60s Fisher 500B, w/ original tubes, except 1 in the MPX section.

'30s (?) Admiral 78 rpm TT & Radio - AM and Shortwave. The TT seems later than the 30s, but the ferrite-core tuner section says early. The steel phono needle and break-neck speed sound terrible, but the radio picks up Radio Havana nicely from upstate NY.

'60s (RIP) big 'ol console radio and record player (no high-falutin' turntable here bub) I don't recall the maker. Left behind when I moved awhile back. A relic of the time I would take anything with a tube in it... Oh, wait, I still do that.

1941 Schwinn DX bicycle. Bought straight out of the barn where it had hung for 40 years - Good thing I had no idea how rare it was, or I'd have giggled as I counted out 3 crisp twenties.

1972 Schwinn Stingray. Fun on 2 wheels.

1974 Alfa Romeo GTV. Fun on 4.

The oldest amp I have is a Victor 245 that uses a pair of 45's from the late 20's or early 30's. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find another one, so I have not gone through it. Of the amps listed, all but a few (Fisher 55's, Leak ST60, Eico HF35's and the single Mac 20W2) work. I haven't got around to them yet, as well as quite a few other pieces not listed.

The oldest amps on this list that are in working condition are the Mac 50W2's, which are from 1951 - based on the date in the owners manual. It is surpisingly dynamic and quite detailed sounding, although a bit soft on the high end - which I actually prefer. The bass is quite extended although not as well controlled as some of the newer vintage amps I own. An overall good performer - better in many respects than the latter chrome Mac pieces. Of course, that's a subjective opinion.

Main System:
Turntables: AR XA with Merrill Mods/SME 3009-II/Signet TK3e?; Dual 1229
Integrated Amplifier: Eico HF-81, believe the hype
Speakers: 1972 Klipsch Cornwall II, astounding but cramped by basement setting
CD Player is an Early 90s Kenwood from the thrift store, chosen primarily based on BULK. Heavy extruded metal dampened case, digital outs. Cries out, "POOGE ME!" (Been listening almost exclusively to vinyl)

Miscellaneous:
Forget what model Grundig console, pretty impressive multiband tuner; pervasive HUM needs attention
2 Stereo SE-EL84 Power Amps from Magnavox Consoles, really great sounding!
Stereo PP-EL84 Power Amp, also a Magnavox
Stereo PP-6V6 Power Amp from a Lowery? organ. I've never heard this one: needs an 0A2 and testing.
Akai GXC-760D, Three heads three motors also built like a TANK
Akai GX-F71, another nice 3 head deck, more modern than the above
Another Akai three head deck, don't remember the model, console-style with the controls on top.
Sony CDP-400 (1983), built like a TANK
Late 60's/Early 70's Sony STR-6046 Receiver; going Pre-out into one of the SE-EL84s
Hitachi Reel Deck
A few more Duals including a backup 1229

A certain amount of this stuff will eventually work its way on to ebay, but WAF or no WAF the Eico and the Cornwalls will be ripped only from my cold dead fingers!

My Stuff:

1) Thorens TD-160,TP-16,Grado 8mz modified w/xlo cables, damping of platter, subchassis, and tonearm, removal of bottom cover and use brass cones for feet

2)Magnepan MG1 improved - xover hardwiring & cap upgrades, Linaeum tweets incorporated to extend high freq., hot glue around perimeter of frame interface, stiffened frame

3) Dahlquist DQ10(early vintage) - Upgraded xover components, delete fuse and piezo, replace low tweets w/scanspeak models, mirror image drivers

4) Dahlquist DQLP1 electronic xover.

5)Polk speaker cable - yes, this still sounds good!

Would still desire a nice tube amp like HK CITATION II, Audio Research D76 or D90 - maybe two to strap since my speakers are notorious for power

Hm, I'm not sure if it's considered to be particularly good, I hadn't specifically heard that. I'm still trying to figure out how to get it to sound good. It sounded promising a while back but since repairing the bias supply and changing tubes (and a completely different system) it's not so great. I need to mess with it some more when I have time, I think that's basically the "secret" with vintage gear, there's always something wonderful in there waiting to come out, you just have to figure out how to bring it forth!

Paul,
I've had lots of the stuff for years. Back in 1990 it was all still considered "junk.". A Mac 225 cost the same. $225. Now that tubes are in again, as I always knew they would be, prices have gone up.
I like to try different things to see how they sound and go together.
I use the Mac 225,C22, MR67,Altec Flamencos (with added EVT350 tweeters)the Fairchild Table and Grado Arm (AT OC9 Cartridge-Ortofon T-30 Xfmr)for my everyday system.Very nice fast and clean sound. Amazing how some of this stuff blows away new so called audiophile equipment. Just had a shootout with a $3200 table/arm and the Fairchild/Grado. The Fairchild/Grado won in my opinion.
Screw the neighbors. I have to put up with their screaming grandchildren all summer!

I'm using Telefuken 7189, Mullard 7247 and Mullard 5AR4.
The caps are all original (!)--I bought this amp at a garage sale with no tubes, but totally complete w/cage for $25.00.

I stuffed in the tubes, brought it up on a variac and have been listening to it almost every day for 5 years with no modifications at all. It is a very sweet sounding amp and have found it to be excellent for listening to bebop and even some big-band jazz at pretty good volume through the Tannoys. It doesn't have the rock-solid bass of my McIntosh amps, but it is really "pretty."

The SA-100 (and the SA-300, the EL34 big brother) are very well-made amps--the chassis are solid copper and the iron is pretty hefty for a tiny little 20wpc P/P amp. It also has very handy external bias and gain control knobs.

I love this little amp. By the way, what do they go for on ebay?
I would think it shoud be worth at least 3 or 4 hundred bucks in good condition.

>>>See my posting above for my list>>of those,I like my Allied 333
the best--it's versatile--I can use it as a stand-alone am/fm receiver, and the 6BM8 output tubes make it sound quite nice, and I can ALSO use it as a tube PREAMP because it has
a speakers on/off switch--which allows me to patch any
number of cd player, or borrowed MD deck or LP table into it then run the signal thru the Allied's tube preamp stage out to
a more powerful amp,and into the
Magnepan SMg's(my favorite speakers)...BTW, the Allied has
a "magic-eye" tube, which really helps tune
the stations, and looks WAY COOL!!

"Cat herder", eh? Very amusing. Does that mean multiple cat owner? I've heard they clean up the sound of power amps by sleeping on them, (is it a fur/static effect?) though you wouldn't want to try that with tubes, or even certain solid states.

I looked at the website you mentioned and the equipment/prices seemed very appealing. Right now I'm on a sentimental 60s kick, but when the audio purist in me resurfaces, I'll keep the SAS gear in mind.

When you say you bought your system there, I assume you aren't referring to the Dyna and Bogen pieces!

That's amusing! Maybe old Herman Hosmer knew a thing or two. I'm reluctant to buy modded vintage stuff because I have no idea whether it truly improves the equipment, and in any case it's not what the designer had in mind. There are exceptions of course, but I'm not knowledgeable enough technically to know them. At least you're having fun. The Fisher amp we had used 6BQ5 push-pull or something like that -- I hate to confess I am electrically untutored -- and I was wondering if other amps using this configuration would also tend to be sweet sounding.

Thanks for the useful info!

One day I hope to be a fixer-upper but no time to learn right now. Looking to recreate nostalgic boyhood system (which also happened to sound pretty good!) Now that I am an Ebay peruser and know that the stuff is out there I don't feel I need to jump on the first unit I see, but what I hope to get eventually is probably a Fisher X100B or C -- it's what we had, I think. It's an integrated, rated at 25 wpc ("IHF Music Power")and sold for $169.95 at Korvettes around 1962 or 3. No knobs in upper row, six knobs across bottom, no flip-down knob-cover. Some of the controls were functionally double-ganged, all looked double-ganged i.e. same shape even though the two sections did not turn independently. I lost an auction on one a while back, but it was nice to know they are still out there. Other Fisher models could interest me too, like the S100 poweramp; it's just a question of how much money and space I have at a given time. (Not so much at the moment.) I also like the Scott 299C and the matching tuner. I also like the earlier Scotts with the funky brown metal knobs and even the later Scotts with plastic knobs that looked like Fisher knobs. Then there's Eico and H-K, but lets say I'm a long way from my first million and already out of shelf space. But if you hear of an integrated as described, you are welcome to drop me an email at phenderson@snl.com

Seriously, I confess to wanting the unit to look nice. I'm already convinced of the sound, since I remember how nice it sounded. I wouldn't even want fake Fisher knobs unless they were exactly the same.

I get the impression this Doc has been affected by the HMO thing like so many others. Delays, confusion, etc.

I'd probably want a turn key amp and tuner, preferably the X202 and FM200. It would wet my appetite and allow me to get the 500 rebuilt, then I could get the separates rebuilt.

I too like the units to look good but I am not an addict. I would not change my knobs for a series that did not go with the unit but they need not be NOS. I would make sure I retained the originals. I made the mistake of replacing the front panel of my FM-3 during a rebuild with 1 from Sound Values (flat plate with no raised edge). I forgot to get the original back and when I realized the error, the repair person had died (less than 2 weeks after giving the unit back) and the widow had closed his repair area, hence never got it back and now it does eat at me a bit since it does not match my SCA35 amp.

Hi,
Actually this is not a "modded"299b.A rebuild using modern parts(under chassis caps)new coupling caps, rebuilt power supply etc. After I posted,I found my problem.I installed 4 resistors of the waaay wrong value.Things are back to normal now.
BTW,this is a 7189 PP integrated. The 7189 is a 6bq5 with higher plate and grid voltage.Sounds virtually the same.Scott and Fisher sound different but this tube type is known for a sweet but punchy signature.Probably the sonics you remember fondly.I prefer a 6bq5/el84/7189 based amp to el34 and 7591 types for this reason.
Best,
Pat

Hi Mr. Henderson,

I don't know what year my EPI Time/Energy 100's were made. On the rear the legend " A Penril Company" is found. Does this help? I have only had them about 4 months. I purchased them secondhand.

Do those Servolinears have any relation to Rectilinears?, posted on March 27, 2001 at 00:49:30
Just browsing through some mid 70's issues of Hifi magazine and I found several ads for Rectilinear speakers (models III thru X) and thought they looked pretty interesting. I was just wondering if these were in any way related to the Servolinears you mentioned.
Thanks, Doug Eisemann

Hello Doug,

No relation.
My dad had the Rectilinears Xs (10s) which he purchased in about 1968. Very inefficient, moderate sized 3 way, with very good bass for a box its size, OK highs, and colored mids. However, for the time, it was a good speaker...and the second really "hi fi" quality speaker I had heard.

Servolinear speakers were manufactured in Modesto, CA from about 1974 through 1980. We sold them at a stereo store I worked at in the Bay Area -- Pud's. We would compare them with JBL, Advent, AR, Epos, etc. and they blew everthing away that was even near their price range.

The Servolinear III was the first model -- $300 a pair. (Later they made some bigger, more expensive models -- the VI sounded very good -- but the III was the best value.) The "III" was a small, floor standing, 3-way pyramid shaped speaker -- perhaps 24" tall and 12" square at the base. The 10" woofer was servo-controlled. The CTS midrange ran full range. The tweeter was a piezio-(sp?)-electric unit that was pointed "up" and that had a "lens" around it (the "top" of the pyramid shape). The lens "disbursed" the high frequencies into a non-beaming pattern. I don't think that the speaker used a crossover -- or if it did, it was basically a cap on the tweeter. The "servo-mechanism" controlled the woofer and keep it from running too high up into the mids. (How that was done was never explained to me -- can't remember if it was proprietary or if I just didn't care...)

The sound was very open and natural, with good dynamics when driven by decent solid state receivers (I used the Pioneer SX828) or amps (later used the Son of Ampzilla). The sound was also balanced and musical. The piezio-electric tweeter had a slight "hiss" that was noticable when there was no signal -- but interestingly just "went away" when playing music. When playing music, the highs were very, very good.

I lived with those speakers for several years -- very happily. I would love to hear a pair today. Alas...

WTS
