Could the owner of an AR XA please measure the diameter and length of the tonearm counterweight so I can make a replacement? I would also need the distance from one end to the set screw. I picked up a decent XA for $40.00 but it is missing the headshell and counterweight. I am going to buy one of the 3-D printed headshells on Ebay and can easily make the counterweight if I can get the proper dimensions.

Gary,

The original CW I have from a parts box is D=27.8 mm and L=21.8mm.

I assume you've seen photos so know it is dropped, not centered?

Since it is best to keep the weight as close to the pivot point as possible have you considered increasing the diameter while reducing the length? I don't know the original weight and don't have a means to accurately weigh the one I have. Unless of course you want it to appear original.

The AR-XA can still be a wonderful unit once restored, good luck.

A larger diameter and shorter length is a good idea. I can calculate the weight at onlinemetals.com. They have a great calculator that lets you choose the material and dimensions and then gives you the weight. I can futz with the dimensions to maintain the same weight.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Dee Eye, I have an extra counterweight for the AR-XA. I have to go to a painting job but will be home around 7.30 EST today. Give me a call, Mark Korda 207-632-1648..... I bought a new headshell from Ebay and it's really worth it. I'll dig up the paperwork to see if we have the same seller.(kordamark@gmail.com)

I would stay with the original dimensions, materials, etc. I am sure they were well thought out.

Yes, no doubt they were "well thought out" at the time they were designed (actually I believe they were ahead of their time). But that was around 1961 and a few things have been learned about turntable and arm design since then. ;^)

that moving the weight toward the center of pivot decreases the force necessary to accelerate the arm toward the center of the record (1/m^2) while the weight will have to increase by (1/radius), so while the weight will have to be heavier, there's a net decrease in radial inertia.

So radially there's decreased effective mass while maintaining a fixed effective vertical mass (no acceleration in the vertical axis).

Have I got that right?

Hi Gary, when I sent your package I can't recall if I wrote Brookledge or Brookridge. The number for info is 1-800-222-1811. If they send it back I'll send it right back, but with a phone call today I hope a delivery can be made. Here's the tracking number again (9500 1161 3692 6188 0028 441). I have to go paint a room for an old gal so I can't do the tracking right now.....Mark Korda 207-632-1648

You guys should have taken this to private email rather than post personal information on a public forum. Too late for this time.

I believe you but there are folks out there who would take advantage of the unguarded. Just offering the suggestion.

Thanks Kal your right. Next time I'll be more careful. I may have fumbled the right address and I didn't want to keep someone waiting if it gets returned to me. Good tip Kal...Mark.
