I am looking for some vintage speakers to mate with my Jolida JD-302CRC tube amp (50 wpc). I listen to mostly jazz but some classical and mild rock. Suggestions please....

What is your budget?

Under $500
1) ADS 710,810,890 & 990
2) Klipsch Forte, Heresy, and possibly KLF 10 & 20
3) Dalquist DQ-10
4) Spica TC-50

I linked a video of the Spica's. For non head banging sound levels they are fantastic.

Please let us know what you choose.

If you want some vintage speakers that usually fly well under the radar.....ADC.
Yeah, I know they made phono cartridges, but they had a line of bookshelf speakers too.

How about A/D/S 710's or 810's? I have a pair of 710's and like them.

I'm fond of Soliloquy speakers linked to a vacuum tube based setting. I have soliloquy 5.0 which are "bookshelf" speakers and Soliloquy 6.3s which are floor standing. The 6.3's are in my main system paired with Conrad Johnson PV-10 preamp and CJ MV-55 amplifier (both vacuum tube based) and another pair in a home theater setting combined with a C-3 center speaker. I listen to classical, jazz, and rock in that order. In my situation, the mid-range for vocals is excellent, the bass is tight, and the highs are clear. In truth, you have a lot of good options from many brands, so take your time, do your research, and listen when you can.

...especially the L710 and L810. Look for the later ones with the metal grills.

Great speakers.

Vintage Maggies would sound good. I replaced Braun LV1020s with MG-IIs back in the 70s.

I have heard that A/D/S speakers are inefficient. Is 50 WPC enough to drive them?

Sure but most are four ohm which means if your amp is good and does 50@8 ohms it should do 100@4 ohms. ADS are also pretty efficient with numbers usually in the low 90's. What's your amp?

What do you think of Boston Acoustics A-100's? Anyone have an opinion?

They are decent, but not in the same league as the ADS or Spica.

Their foam surrounds were also prone to rotting.

A good a mp, should do fine. But a tube amp which does not double with the impedance drop.

You would be hard pressed to do better than a Spendor BC-1 or one of its later variants. Jazz, classical and mild rock sound fantastic on my pair. 50 tube watts is just about right.

My Dynaco Mark IV's drive my ADS 500's without a hitch. My friend's Luxman tube amp drove his ADS speakers fine to. These were not high powered amps. The ADS have an impedance curve like a ruler, so tubes are no problem.

I had heard the BC1 many years ago and really liked the sound of them. They are hard to find now at a decent price.....

I got lucky and bought mine dirt cheap ($125), but that was a long time ago. I think Spendor still makes a version of it, but at some point, they dropped the lossy BBC style thin walled plywood cabinet damped with bitumen. I think that this is an important reason why the sound is so good. I think you'd be fine with any of the versions with a lossy cabinet, and there are a lot of them out there.

Old timers at the Asylum note that the BC-1 was Joe Rosen's favorite dynamic speaker.

I prefer classic Infinity's, especially the ones with polypropylene drivers.
