I have never heard a field coil speaker, but there is a lot of talk about them on the Asylum. Add another item to the bucket list! (I had to take a bunch of things off it when I got married!)

Field coils are also known as electrodynamic. No magnet but a voltage charged coil that creates a magnetic field.

Back before AlNiCo became available, field coils were the only way to obtain adequate magnetic flux densities, for good sensitivity/efficiency.

A niche market currently exits for that sort of driver. They are used with "flea power" tubed amps. Remember, a #10 DHT based SET amp yields less than 1 WPC.

Hi Eli,

The Brociner/Lowther in the link is a field coil and is specked to handle 25 watts, but I suspect they are very rare. I'd love to hear one or two! It would probable play quite loud drive by a flee powered amp.
