Ive never seen SAE try so hard to look like a Marantz. Cool though. Its on LA Craigslist for $500. Gotta love the nixie tubes. Wow look at the matching pre a 7 clone. I had a 7T. I guess I saw more ot the mid late 70's black front SAE stuff.

I have never seen or known about those two pieces and I have known Bonji for 30 years as a friend of mine had one of the earliest GAS dealerships.
The SAE stuff is very high quality but for some reason it didn't have the cult following and the high priced vintage value as the GAS stuff did. I would assume it had a lot to do with Bonji leaving SAE and starting GAS..Those look like very nice pieces and if you can get them for 400 instead of 500,that would be a hell of a bargain.

No but I own this ugly duckling, complete with wood case. Actually it is not that bad looking but compared to your photo ... Never owned a SAE tuner, but that one looks great! (OK, I like the Marantz look.) Both are sweet looking pieces. I wonder how they sound!

Yes, I have seen them. Back in the 70's. To some SAE electronics were the ultimate...

mated to a Mk XXXI amp pushing large Advents. Nice cost-effective combination.

I am pretty sure that was the amp I had. It was in a nice wood case. I gave it to my father and he hooked it up in a way that I did not recommend and he blew it up. I then got him a Denon receiver which I still have.

SAE was usually well regarded. I never got to own any of their stuff, but always liked it. It always seemed to fly under the radar of most people.

I have one, it utilizes digital display for readout, rather than the Nixie tubes. It is a pretty decent FM turner and there may be someone who does upgrades. But as FM broadcast quality has dwindled, so has my interest. Our classical station I now call Reader's Digest Classical since they only play popular movements rather than complete symphonies or concertos. So it is either a college station for jazz or NPR for news and Click & Clack.

Very nice but no scope. Has more of the SAE look that I saw in high school.

One of my Yamaha tuners has an output for a scope. Yes, I have a collection of tuners. Fortunately I bought them after they became worthless, so I did not pay much.

at the Stereo Shop in Atlanta on Peachtree near Piedmont Hospital circa '72 or so.

The system included the model X hybrid electrostatic speaker.

when I was 15. Their cosmetics and sound quality were very much in line with my preferences at the time (never was a blue meter enthusiast). I had Advents driven by an AR integrated using a Lenco L-75 with a Shure M91ED. It wasn't until two years later that I experienced tri-amped Tympani T-IIIs using Audio Research electronics which became my new reference at the time. That was the first of several "recalibrations" of how realistic an audio system could be. Despite their panache, K-Horns and A-7s never did anything for me when I actually heard them.

Fast forward two more years to when I was introduced to Dr. Cooledge's Dayton-Wrights - now I understood what a truly full range electrostat could do. And that changed everything for me. It was then I realized that I was a coherency freak. :)

Yup. My speakers at the time consisted of the Janszen Z130 ELS array and a KEF B139 in a tuned enclosure. As close as I could get back then. The big Gauss woofers were out of my league.

Dr. Roger West (now of Sound Lab) began his involvement with electrostats making the JansZen panels more reliable long ago.

I find that he has far surpassed what Arthur ever did with his unique approach to addressing directivity and resonance issues associated with full range stats. While the KLH 9 (in doubles) was impressive, compare that to what Dr. West has done with doubling his 922s. :)

Just finished restoring a pair of Stax F-83 that had gone through Hurricane Sandy. What a mess. 2 1/2 year restoration but not all at once!

Next project is restoring a stacked pair of Infinity Servo-Stats. Only two pair made of the stacked version. One for Arnie Nudell the other for Cary Christy. This pair originally belonged to Cary.

I sure I wish I had known you when I had my Beverige model 3s..I loved those speakers but I had to take them apart every 2 weeks and coat the panels with corona dope. They just did not like the Michigan climate.I have owned three pairs of Martin Logans and two pair of Acoustats and I've never had an issue with any other than the pin holes in the diaphragms of the Acoustat 3s in a couple areas. I have the Martin Logan CLXs now.

They are far from worthless now. Unless you live at the bottom of a narrow few hundred yard wide valley 100 miles away from any FM worth listening to like me. I sold my Eico setup with a souped up hft 90 FM, hft 94 AM and MX 99 multiplexor.

Only saw them at an audio show in Atlanta back in '74. Unfortunately, they were in a "static" display (pun intended).

Arnie made some really cool designs, but I never heard one that sounded top to bottom coherent. The bass with the IRS / Genesis Ones was fabulous, but seemed to belong to a different speaker. In the case of the SS-1, attempting to mate a single 18" woofer crossed at 100 hz (according to a Stereophile review) to the electrostatic midrange panels.

More pics here.

Tube tuners do still seem to hold their value and the best of the best of transistor tuners can still fetch good prices. However, my current best sounding tuner, the B&K TS-108, doesn't sell for much. The Tuner Information Center says that it Ebays for $130 to $190. Not bad for a peace this age, but a very good deal for the buyer of a piece this good. Ergonomics suck. I don't know if that affects the price and those prices might not be up to date.

AM- right wing talk radio or sports talk.

FM- classic rock or current pop/hip hop.

Unless you're a glutton for punishment or you listen for the emergency test warning, a radio is pretty much worthless.
