Fm tuner out of console


This is the MPX that came out of the Ampex console all telefunkens in the preamp and MPX and the AMPEX open reel,F44 or 1200 I think.


This is the preamp that came out of the console


These amps came out of the Ampex console we picked up and they came with Amperex EL34s but these are 6L6 amps which are larger 40 watt amps even tho they put EL34s in these. I measured the impedance and they 6.6k which is typical for a 6L6gc


These are Allison 1s and I pulled one section of the grill off for you to see and its same drivers in the other section.

 My friend Roger finds this stuff thru Craigslist where people call him and we buy the stuff. The Ampex stuff came out of a console we bought and it even has the original hard cover manual signed by the owner of Ampex.

 the Allison woofers appear to be replacements :-(

You also probably noticed that the grilles get wicked brittle after four-ish decades of exposure to the elements.

I am a big fan; they're mighty fine loudspeakers. Here's one of mine (not a great photo, unfortunately):

I don't have a photo of the woofers handy... but I noticed that the woofers on a Jensen-era "Advent" Legacy II loudspeaker pair I recently refoamed (and found a new home for -- imagine that?!) had a woofer that was morphologically quite similar to the Allison One's woofers.

 The grills are very brittle but we got the speakers at a very good deal but I want to ask you.How do tell if the woofers are replacements? I'll take a closer photo later.

 Your photo looks like a plain paper cone, and the dustcap looks "wrong" as well.

I have a couple of spares (not yet re-surrounded) in the basement (someplace) -- I will take front & rear photos and post anon.

 That is my only SP3a and I"m letting Roger use it and I did all the McShane upgrades to it and the Citation 2 underneath along with some of my own.I'll let you know if I ever sell it.The preamp that I really like right now is the Heathkit AA-11.They are very rare but have a nice potted choke in power supply and it uses Baxandall tone control circuit which to me is the only way to do tone controls other than tone switching like the Marantz 7C,the Citation 1, and Mac C22uses.

 Oval drivers cancel resonance that exists in round drives. That may be part of what you are hearing in in the TL speakers. It looks like the added some type of damping to the cone to. The wood is nice too. It is probably a well thought out design. Was there a brand name on them?

I am guessing they were replaced, but -- looking at the brochure scan above (from www.classicspeakerpages.net of course) I may have that wrong, too.

The original Allison Two, I thought, had a visually similar (albeit smaller) woofer to the One's -- but I don't have any Twos, so I could be wrong. They should be coated paper -- pretty sure of that.

I do know a fellow across the river (Connecticut) that does, though :-)

 I still have a pair of the oval woofer speakers that I bought from a rep doing a home domo in the late 70's or early 80's. I think they were made by a guy in LA or TX and used a Japanese clone of the Peerless paper tweeter. Mine are a faux walnut laminate.

Tone switching is where they don't use potentiometers for bass and treble but what they do use is an actual multi-position switch. Across each one of these switch positions,they have a resistor/cap combo,so this more or less couples those parts of circuit as if you had just a single resistor/cap combo like preamps today with no tone controls.This type of circuit is said to greatly reduce or eliminate phase shift that tone controls typically cause.It allows you to increase amplitude of the bass or treble region by switching to a different resistor/cap combo.
I'm pretty your 7T uses tone switching..If the bass and treble pots go click when you turn them,it is a tone switching circuit.

 I appreciate that. Knowing him though he'll track one down soon.

He (Will Vincent) did some mods on and sold me my SP3A and then replaced
the power supply when it went awol a few years ago. He was wondering if I
wanted to sell it back to him!

Hell no, he did TOO good a job on it.

Told him I'd keep an eye open for one...

 It is fascinating how advanced the SOTA equipment was back then. They must have done some sort of compensation like that in my Yamaha C-2x, because the tone controls have the least effect on the sound of any preamp I have used. That is very important to me since much of the music I listen too is less than perfect. Tone controls can make this music much more enjoyable.

 At the time they beat out HPM 100s for bass quality and overall smoothness. IIRC, there was also a pair of Original Advents in the room and they were equal in the bass but much smoother in the mids and treble. They were very good with vocals, especially. BTW, mine have foam "treatment" on the oval drivers and the tweeters.

Mine have seen workshop and warehouse duty for the last 25 years.

Do you have a schematic of the AA-11 you could share? I checked the usual sites and didn't find one. I am curious what makes that circuit special.

 The woofers on the Allison Two's are sticky coated paper. I got them from the original owner and he said that they never had any work done to them. I'm positive they are original.

 The transmission line speakers are NAS - North American Speaker from Dallas Tx. I think the oval driver was made by Toby Speakers from Ft. Worth. I'm not positive, there's not a lot of info on the web. They made two other models with horns, but these were the only transmission line speakers.

I just got these JBL C36's , with D130 and 075 tweeters. The guy I bought them from inherited them from his uncle who purchased them in 1957. He was not into audio so I grabbed them.comparing them to my C38's which has the D130 and potato mashers.
It's all about the music!

 I don't know if this would be a viable option, but there is a nice looking ARC SP9 MKIII Stereo PreAmplifier listed for sale on Craigslist in Detroit (see URL Link). I have nothing to do with the seller. No asking price is listed.

 That is an enviable display of equipment, many of which you have mentioned in other posts. How do you thing the JBL compares with Klipsch. I used to sell Klipsch, but have a preference for vintage JBL, although I expect the La Scalas to should great.

I did just basics to it for now and I put a few sonicap teflons in along with k40s and solen film and tin foils and then of course the filter caps.
I did lots of stuff underneath but when I finish I can post more pics.

 Dave, I got the Belle's about 2 years replacing LaScalls. I love the Belle's running tubes. Can't imagine ever getting rid of them. I rotate them with the C38's, but man it's hard to pick which ones are my favorites. The JBL's are fantastic, close my eyes and they disappear. In this small room I think the JBL's are my favorites. Can't wait to get both of them in a bigger room. I know gee such a nice delemia.

 Oops! I got my Belle and La Scalla mixed up. it was the 80's when I sold Klipsch and the biggest speakers that went out our doors was the Forte'. If I had the room I would probably DIY something along the line of La Scalla/Belle or K-horns, depending on the room. But that won't happen soon!
