I truly am at that point where I can't imaging getting any more equipment.

I have the VTA ST-70 amp with Conrad Johnson Classic 2SE preamp.

Sherwood S-5000 fully restored.

And my speakers are great. A pair of Zaph Audio SR-71 with subwoofer.

I keep looking but I just don't see any need to actually buy anything!!!!

What happened to that innocent young boy that would spend a thousand dollars on a broken stereo off of ebay.

Ah - maybe I'll buy a nicer subwoofer?????

Or you could buy a matching amp for your CJ preamp. Everybody knows matching components sound better...ha ha....

I have lots of equipment and some very expensive Martin Logan speakers that were about 26k and then you add the pair of ML subs and it brings it up another 7k.Then you have the strapped McShaned citation 2s running it and it's very impressive however, there is no fun in it anymore other than listening to musical selections and analyzing what you heard after. It's a take your breath away type of system but as I get older,I have more fun with my smaller stuff like the Sherwoods, and Mac Ma230s, and the Eico ST70s, and putting them on the AR3s or some cheap speaker I cobbled together with my electrostatic add ons making it sound terrific.
I hate going down the basement anymore to listen to music.I think I want to buy a 120 year old victorian home when I retire with high ceilings and then redoing it and that way I can be real nostalgic vintage.BTW,the stuff you have is perfect and the VTA amps I love and my daughter has one as well. She took one my Dynaco ST-70s and we put in the VTA board with a 12au7 in the voltage amp and 12bh7s on the phase inverter and driver. She runs it on a pair of AR LSTs and she runs her Sherwood on her Green Mountain audio speakers..She lives in Fla and goes to estate sales and finds incredible stuff cheap.

I was talking Qman yesterday and he runs his system in mono and he using one western electric type horn speaker along with his Fisher 400cx2 all rebuilt with a film cap supply in the early stages. He has control over it with the A+B combined settings and he doesn't have to worry about left to right. So lets take the victrola and make it into something fanatical...LOL

That is exactly want I mean. I've had pieces that were several thousands. And quite honestly the old humble Sherwood - every time I turn it on I'm just floored how good that stereo sounds.

And the VTA ST-70 - What the heck else more do you really expect from a stereo?

As for speakers I've done that search for 35 years. The Zaph's are honest and true. Add a good sub and what more can you ask of a speaker.

He grew up. A respected dealer once told me that the chase stops when you say it does. ;-)

Right now I'm taking AR3s and I disconnected the mids and tweeters and I put my Janszen 130s which go from 500cps to 20khz and then I stuck electrostat 3s on top of that for presence..I'm running it like the AR1w with both elecrostats back in the day. Here is a picture that is like but without the electrostat 3s on top.

But don't underestimate all aspects of AC delivery, vibration isolation and other tweaks. They make a big difference.

I streaming 100% of my music. And I can't find a better streamer player than my Marantz NA7004.

Hi Airtime, you'll never be done. You and Mike Samara are perfect examples of Hi-fi nuts that don't get their jollies buying the most exspensive gear but revel in making the much less costly gear sound it's best. Thats a hobby that goes forever.Your Hi-fi Hot Rodders.....Mark Korda

I have a nice system that sounds great.

But- I recently became aware of several pieces of vintage and high end equipment in my area that can probably be purchased at a good price.
VAC 30/30, ARC D90b and matching ARC Preamp, MAC MX112/MC162, Esoteric DV50, Theshold S150

Some would be lateral moves, some would be upgrades. Still deciding what to do.

It never ends.

That said, I do get pleasure from my computer system:

Musical Fidelity a3.2 integrated, AR ES1/Shure V15Vmr, HRT streamer and Spica TC 50 speakers.

I may swap out the MF for a Fisher 500c or X202c.

Its all relative I suppose.

Seriously, nice haul! Since you can get them at a good price, you can always flip them if they don't stack up!

You need to spend 5x what you spent on the rest of the system in cables. Seriously, you can DIY some interesting stuff without spending much. I will be doing this for my system.

The most blessed event is when you wake up one day, realize you enjoy your system, and rebel at the thought of trying one more cable.

Recently I watched an amazing video, one where you say..Well DUHH! but I never fully realized that.

the video emphasized that sound is compressed air, pressure. I've been playing with wave lengths of RF for decades and without really thinking about it understood sound wave lengths the same way. This video pointed out that sound is pressure wavelengths; and if the wave length is longer than our body it surrounds us just like an ocean wave will. If longer than the opening in a speaker box it like wise surrounds the speaker box causing interference, nodes and anti-nodes, for every frequency. add a second speaker, what a mess! add in diffraction from the speaker box and edges on a speaker box--it's really freighting!Mix the speed of sound through air 1,126 ft/s divide that by cps of 70 cps, 17 feet, 18,000 cps .06 ft, or 3/4 inch

Impossible for a speaker to handle that!! :-))

Never assume anything I post is accurate.

I would acquire another of what you already have and make them powered three ways.

I usually find that compact stand mounts don't transition as well to single subs without some localization effects. That was the case with Polk LSi9s previously used in the HT which have almost identical woofer area.

they don't have to match... maybe better if they don't.
