The thread below on rebuilding cost for a pas/st70 got me itching to have a working PAS again; my old one is a PAS2 I've had for thirty years and it has been modded to a fare-the-well-- the last iteration introduced ground loop and b+ voltage issues that I have yet to deal with. But the article junkwaffel linked to convinced me that a decent stock PAS would be worth having if I could find one...

...so I found a listing on the Evil Auction Site for a PAS supposedly built by an electronics professional, and owned by a guy who operates a gear restore business in his retirement. What hooked me was that he said it measured to all original specs and voltages. The original specs of the PAS were unsurpassed at its price point, so that's no slouch. He did put in an SS filament supply, which is OK by me. Icing on the cake was free shipping. I paid the 275 bucks and waited...

...and waited. The free shipping was UPS, whatcha gonna do? Fortunately it was undamaged and looked great. Throwing caution to the wind, I shoved it in my system and fired it up. The old guy wasn't lying-- it looks great and sound fantastic. Blows my older unit away, but now I can deal with those issues (probably power supply again) and still listen to sweet sweet music. I suppose I really should see if it really meets the original specs, but I'm too busy listening to music-- sweet, punchy, wide band low distortion music. Sometimes an auction transaction exceeds expectation. And another vote for a near-stock PAS as a truly great sounding preamp, as long as it's in spec.

I'm pleased about your success. However, a cautionary note is in order. The O/P impedance of a "stock" PAS is high. When short, low capacitance, interconnects between "boxes" are employed and the I/P impedance of the power amps is high, good things can/do happen. Remember, Dyna power amps have high I/P impedance pentode based voltage amplifier circuitry.

Most definitely do not connect a "stock" PAS to the IHF "standard" 10 Kohm load.

For me, that doesn't seem to be a problem. My interconnects are short and my power amp is an old Sylvania tube console amp with 7025s on the inputs. So far it's working out very well.
