A younger couple brings in their aunts Philco console to have restored for her as a surprise. It's 1959 stereo, phono only small console with about a three or four tube amp.

They are quoted $1500 to restore the cabinet and electronics. That's just too much for this very small console that is only a foot or so tall, maybe thirty inches wide, sitting on four thirty inch legs.

When the guy speaks of the electronic side its clear he doesn't know much. He says the wiring needs replacing and the transistors and diodes and that he's not sure if the tubes are available still. He says nothing about the changer. He also does not mention caps and its full of PIO caps. Yikes, there is so much wrong with that!

Then the other guy in the shop starts to work on the electronics which are removed from the unit. He plugs it in and quickly shocks himself such that it throws the breaker! It powered up before but not after.

They didn't show much more of the electronics repair/restore but they replaced the speakers. They didn't show what they did to the phono if anything. The cabinet restore was good but they substituted a different color and type of grill cloth.

Scary

It's called American Restoration. It features three shops; one in NY, one in California and one near Atlanta which did the phono.

It's the spinoff of Pawn Stars that used to only show stuff done by Rick Dales restoration shop. He gave up the show saying it was a distraction.

Rick Dale was not involved with stereo restoration, in Atlanta?

wonder how many takes he had to do to get that right?

They just can't find enough dopes for Reality TV.

I liked Rick and his son on the original series; they seemed genuine and talented.

Dale decided he didn't want to do the show anymore. So now it is these three shops in NY, Cal and the one near Atlanta that did the old stereo.

It happened when he used two hands, one on the chassis which was obviously hot since with an unpolarized plug its 50/50 and the other must have touched something neutral or grounded.

Yes it was LV. He had a electronics guy in town to do
any electro-mechanical work beyond their abilities.

I think muse's point is that the "shock" stood a fair chance of being faked. Sadly, that seems to be a routine element of reality TV -- they feel the need to create dramatic tension so the situation always needs an element of something going wrong. Then you have the "cut" to the commercial so you have to stick around to see how things turned out. The stock formula is almost always annoyingly obvious.

It also doesn't help that the acting is typically bad.

Hmm... something fishy here. I've shocked myself quite a few times. But, never to the point of tripping a 20-amp breaker. Prolly be dead if that happened.

I can't even remember a shock causing the onboard fuse to blow. Accidental shorts due to screwdriver touching something live --- yes. Shocks I've felt --- no.

I've seen two guys trip a 15 A breaker years apart and feel pain, a good bit of pain and be fine. It's possible.
