 Hi, this is the only place besides a seeing a shrink that I can tell whoever cares about seeing something vintage (HiFi), on TV or the movies. It was right when Gilligin's Island was over. The Facts of Life came on. This was years into the show where young (Tootie)now weighed about 285. George Clooney was on and about 18 with real long hair. They were in their living room acting out a scene when on the shelf I saw a Dynaco PAT-4 complete with black rocker switches and the golden faceplate. I had to tell someone this without laying down on the couch and paying for the hour.Have any of you had similar sightings of vintage stereo stuff?....Mark Korda...P.S. To half hedge my bet on this, If I am wrong it was a SCA-80Q.

 his bed on a train. The music was a snake charming, Indian sounding song. The reason was that a deadly snake was on Chan's bed, and he was trying to distract it long enough for his son to show up to shoot the damn cobra. Some very evil person had thrown the snake through Charlie Chan's window. Definitely a good reason to listen to 78rpm shellac.

 Oh yeah, I remember watching the 1965 Jack Lemmon movie, "How to Murder Your Wife," and being completely distracted by the Scott integrated amp and tuner mounted side by side in a cabinet.

And Matt Damon's all-Mac system in "The Departed"(which seemed way too good for a cop), or Jack Nicholson's killer McIntosh system in "As Good as it Gets."

It's like a Crackerjack prize in a movie.

 The PAT-4's black (the early ones were brown) rockers were vertical, right next to each other. The SCA-80's switches were horizontal, spread across the lower part of the front panel. The aluminum panels were finished in different ways through the years (some lighter in color than others, some with fine buff-like scratches, others with very fine pock marks that look like like sand blasting) - it's really hard to get two units (like a PAT-4 and an FM-5 tuner) that actually match.

Ah, my mis-spent youth :-)

 Don't know about the movie version, but Admiral Nelson's quarters aboard Seaview had some interesting audio gear on Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.

 Hi,all you guys must suffer this phobia although I wouldn't say suffer. Bill, did you ever see Jack Lemmons other Hifi in the movie the Apartment? All I can say it looked like something Ray HarryHausen did with 3 violins coming out of the console being played by invisible players. Lemmon must of been an audiophile. JonM I know what you mean about both Dynas cause I have them both. When the PAT5 and SCA-50 came out in 77 Dyna changed the faceplate color again being more silvery and one of the colors. I remember it was called Champagne. Tonight the Facts of Life will be on at 6 pm EST on TV Land and I'll be lookin over Nancy McKeons shoulder pads for the follow up confirmation. Remember Jon, this time slot falls well into happy hour!, I might not have known what was up or down.FRG, I watch Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea on Saturday after Zwengoolie and Lost in Space, and 2 weeks ago I saw some familiar looking vintage Hifi but could not name it. I swear I saw it. Here are 2 others before I go. Animal House; Prof. Don Sutherland,very minor role, had a Dynakit ST-70 in his apt. or house room. Also on an informercial I saw Dean Martin and Sinatra singing beside Deans (Fire pole) and spiral staircase a stack of McIntosh and I did see Nicholsons in the As Good as it Gets. Keep these vintage alerts coming guys, Zay ar vary interesting....my Arte Johnson or just my bad spelling...Mark K.

At first I thought it was a tape deck but maybe it's speakers.

 Hey JonM, I just saw the Facts of Life looking scrupulously for the stereo. Well, Blair was on the phone trying to organize Mrs. Garretts wedding. There it was! The Dynaco PAT-4. The switches were up and down and you could clearly see the headphone jack area. I know, get a life....take care...Mark

 Yes, it was a Marantz 1060 integrated amp. Couldn't make out the other pieces.

 Orsen Welles used to shill for Paul Masson wine. A 1979 commercial (you can see it on you tube) of him touting the brand shows a receiver in the background. It looks like a McIntosh to me. Some here might wish to take a look to see for sure.

Also, a 1965 issue of Life magazine featuring Frank Sinatra shows him relaxing in his living room. Part of the text listed his stereo equipment (McIntosh as the pic clearly shows) at $5,000.

 There is a current series on Amazon called Bosch, and in his living room there is a very nice vintage set-up. I only saw it briefly , but I remember a Mac mc-225 or 250 and a beautiful TT.

 Yeah, that extra income stream paid for an apartment that was pretty ritzy for a cop as well. Nice views, inside and out.

 When your life revolves around being a hoarder of old low fi, mid fi junk that sounds like old low fi, mid fi junk. New, truer sounding gear sounds bad to you. It's not just hearing loss and senility. And, it's not just denial that soon you'll be dead and someone's going to have to dispose of all of that junk you've hoarded. But, you'll be dead. Dead. No more junk for you. You can't take it with you, even if you really, really want to.

But, you don't have to be chronologically old to be a hoarder. Plenty of young guys hoard this old crap, too, as seen in postings here. They have a slight advantage over the old farts. They're likely to live much longer. That should make the old contingent here hostile and suspicious of any youngins.

 That seems like a lot of assumptions, given his post. He was just talking about spotting equipment in old TV shows. Granted the PAT 4 is junk, but Frank Van Alstine will rebuild a PAT 5.

 Crazy Dave, moi rocked a modded PAT-4 for a decade-plus, until Mitsubishi DA-C20 arrived from KPFA. Sounded killer with music-n-home theatre audio. Guitar tones were especially bitchin'. Which is why PAT-4 is now routed through effects loop of Peavey Transformer 112. Utilizin' designer John Fera's mods, through late Brown Soun owner John Harrison's recommended ceramic Tone Tubby speaker, it's like having a boutique amp collection inside one combo. From British to brutish to surf-side six-string twang, plus thousands of other possible tonal combinations. And, unlike most other modelers, you also get emulated amp's unique hum too (which is why Fera included a noise gate with his mods). 'Tis a clean boost unlike any other for this compression-craving curmudgeon. ... Oh yeah, still can't determine what stereo Harry Orwell owned in David Janssen's last television series "Harry O".  That's a surprise to me, but the one I heard were probably getting long in the tooth, and they were not modified. The stereo 120 that I have always seen it paired with was probably a major contributor to the "solid-scrape" sound.

I have never heard Tone Tubby speakers in a stereo, but will if I get a chance. It seems like quite a few people like them.

 That was the joy of Dynakits, Crazy Dave, in being modifiable to owner's specs. Dyna manuals even offered suggestions for kit makers to experiment with. As for Tone Tubbys, moi rocked hemp-reconed Celestion Vintage 30s for several years, until Carver Receiver arrived. That V30 mid-peak was exacerbated by Carver Class H topology. Am now using hemp-reconed Mesa/Celestion CM-90s, which are Celestion's take on Electro Voiced clarity (with just a touch of that Celestion growl). BTW, late Brown Soun owner John Harrison said he received quite a few requests for hemp-reconed V30s for hi-fi use. Recipients said they elicited the best mid-range from their multi-kilobuck rigs. A slightly cheaper way to experiment with hemp-coned drivers is Eminence's Cannabis Rex or Jensen's Jet Falcons. After break-in, they take on an almost alnico-esque robustness. ... On vintage gear-sighting front, KBHR's morning man Chris Stephens rocked Koss Pro 4X headphones on Northern Exposure. Happy Holidaze para Sactown

 That is interesting info on the hemp cone re-cone of vintage woofers. I don't know if I should start with my stereo or my electric guitar! I have a pair of Koss Pro 4AA headphones. They don't beat my Sennheiser HD 555, but sometimes I like to jam out to Sepenwolf, Black Sabbath or the Who like we did in the 70's.

 Why both of course, Crazy Dave (;{) Hemp cones help alleviate that stridency in "solid-scrape" amplification. Peavey engineer John Fera loves Eminence's Cannabis Rex in his Transformer 112 (which he designed, btw), which he gigs with around Meridian, Mississippi. A hemp-reconed V30 elevated a Line 6 Spider II 30, so they probably sound like a slice of harmonic heaven in a Bogner-designed Spider Valve. Late Brown Soun owner John Harrison demonstrated his hemp cone home theatre speakers with a Pioneer SX-5590 (European version of SX-1250). No Pro 4AAs, but do have Pro 4 AAA phones which get abused regularly. Too bad we can't jam like we did in 70s, though, Crazy Dave. Hopped around at a Michael Franti concert a few years back, & got cussed out by back-n-knees for several days afterwards. Guess that's why God invented epsom salts (;{) ... Plenty of vintage pro gear in fourth-season Fugitive episode "Death Is The Door Prize". 73s para Sactown
