I just received a HH Scott 399 and it sound great except for some strange buzzy type high end distortion. This only happens in the tweeter section. I have tried other speakers to eliminate the speaker and it does it in all that I tried so far.

I think, but will have to test more, that it is mainly in the FM section. Really hard to describe this distortion but is sounds like a breakup or buzz when very high notes or voice hiss occurs.

Ideas please.

Thanks,
paul

I had a very similar issue with my 299 amp a while back. The problem was a bit obscure. IIRC there was a rigid wire (via a cap) connecting the volume control with one of the 12AX7 tube pins and there was enough flex in the volume control and chassis such that holding or turning the knob would move the tube pin on the socket slightly creating the same kind of distortion. Cleaning the volume control and retensioning the tube pin socket (and tightening the control on the chassis) improved things a lot.
