I inherited my grandfather's Sony STR-6045 receiver ~1971, and my late brother apparently started to repair it, but gave up. I replaced the shorted output transistors in one channel and got it working . . . I thought . . . until I tried the FM tuner section.

Signal strength is very good and consistent, but the sound crackles and cuts in and out. The overall audio signal level seems to be low.

I think I've narrowed it down to the transistor 2SC710 (Q206) that drives the ratio detector, but I've had to order that transistor. I'm hoping it's not the small discriminator transformer that this transistor drives. The emitter voltage of this transistor fluctuates with the crackling, and placing a scope probe on the collector silences the crackling along with the rest of the signal. The transistor tests OK via a diode test, but I suppose it's possible that it fails under applied voltage.

For anyone who's worked on a Sony receiver of this vintage, do the transistors seem to be the main things to fail? Many of the solder joints on the radio receiver PCB have barely any solder on them, but I couldn't fix this problem by resoldering questionable joints.

Also, if any resistors need to be replaced, are Vishay/Dale metal films acceptable in the IF section to bias the transistors? The manual describes the resistors in it as "carbon type," but doesn't say if they're carbon comp or carbon film. They look sort of like carbon film, but I'm not as familiar with Japanese components as I am with American or European.

I'd look for a service manual- that should have the FM alignment protocol- which would help to identify critical parts in the unit- (I checked HiFi ENgine- Nada ;-(....)
If there are some bad transistors- check the Rs&Cs connected to them- both may have drifted- or failed causing the Transistor failure-
also the caps generically might/probably need attention-
I can't speak to the merits of Carbon comp vs Carbon film vs Metal Oxide...

Happy Listening

I do actually have the service manual, which I found available via download. It's very thorough and well-written.

I've checked nearby electrolytic caps with an ESR meter. It's not foolproof, but it will tell when an electrolytic is going bad. This transistor has only ceramic caps directly attached to it, and the collector gets its DC through a transformer. I mainly see the voltage shift that coincides with the crackling at the emitter, so I suspect that the C-E current flow is being disrupted.

Ceramic caps can fail, but in my experience, in a lower voltage circuit like this, you'll usually lose a transistor before a ceramic cap.

That said, I'm a better tube amp tech than a SS FM section tech. The lack of isolation between inputs and outputs of SS stages always seems to me to make SS troubleshooting a lot more complicated.

I don't have any help to give on repairing it. I just wanted to add that I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the tuner in this receiver. When Sony made this receiver they were going after Marantz and McIntosh. They were very high quality. I have messed around with a working one and I was impressed.
