Hello inmates,

I have a Thorens 124 Turn table in very nice working condition. I finally got it hooked up to the pre-amps I rebuilt and played a few tracks. It has a pretty bad rumble, a very low frequency rumble, so low it will distort my woofers if I get the volume past 2.5. The strange thing is that it is prevalent on one channel.

I thought surely I must have messed something up on that channel of the pre-amp. However, when I switched the inter connects from the turn table around, the rumble went to the other side. So I think the problem is with the turn table.

The other channel will rumble too but it's not as bad, you need to crank it past 4 before that one will distort.

I have very little knowledge about turn tables so I am not sure what is causing this or how to trouble shoot it.

Any ideas?

thanks

J

And that's that hopefully you are not ignoring the invaluable resources of the Asylum archives.

I searched the Vinyl Asylum for "Thorens 124 rumble" and got 124 hits (link below). I don't know if you'll find your answer there (hopefully you will) but it's a great place to start.

Good luck with it.

Hook your dual table back up and see if it goes away but use a different cartridge. If it goes away, you may have a problem in the cartridge if it's only on one channel.

I agree Mikey. There is no way possible that actual turntable rumble could only be in one channel. If the cartridge is good, I am also wondering if it could be a wiring issue.

P.S. I checked out his system. He has 2 fantastic vintage systems. I am a little jealous! The Thorens is definitely the right "next step".

I read through the search and I could not help but notice Joe Rosen's comments. While I don't share his disdain for rim-drives (I own a Rek-O-Kut and a Garrard Type A), I could not help but laugh. Actually we exchanged emails about the Rek-O-Kut. Even though he has very strong opinions about the equipment, he was personally very friendly. Least some idler fans get offended, I think he is wrong. My type A runs smooth as glass and dead quiet in the stock plinth. It was shocking to me how well it runs. So without further adieu:

The Thorens TD-124 is not a mere turntable, it's a pottery wheel.
The Thorens TD-124 doesn't have a mere drive system, it has a 20hp diesel motor and a 44-speed transmission with heavy-duty hydraulically assisted clutch.
The Thorens TD-124 doesn't suffer from rumble, it just makes sure that you do. And it moves the heavens and Earth to do so.
The Thorens TD-124 is not an unjustifiably forgotten classic, it is a refugee from a Leipzig garage sale.
And as LJK Setright would have said: "It's not only built like a tank and is noisy like a tank, but it drives like one too. In point of fact, it IS a tank!"
The Thorens TD-124 should have been accompanied by safety warnings to users.
Warning like: "Use only approved safety glasses and gloves! For outdoor use in well-ventilated areas only" And finally: "Do not operate if drowsy or intoxicated!"

I got a good laugh!

Dave

Mikey,

I sold the dual a long time ago, so I do not have another table or cartridge I could try, but I do have my other pre amp I could try..it is so odd it is one channel, the rumbe goes to the side of wherever I plug that one channel in...

Shoot over to Ira's and hook it up.It may be a setup issue or take a look at a loose wire on the cartridge to the tonearm base.

In the middle of the night, when I posted the link. I was hoping that there'd be some helpful tips for mr9iron to use, but some of those posts made me laugh too.

Joe didn't think much of the Dynaco amps I own, if memory serves me. But he was an interesting character, no doubt about that.

great lines on the 124.
for what it's worth, my 124 came "not working" (2005)
and required a quick oil change and small idler
wheel adjustment and voila, smoothly functioning
turntable. No rumble or noise.

And for those young un's who don't know who LJK
Setright is, check out the 1980's and 90's english
CAR magazine. LJK probably had a Garrard 301.
