Of my Sansui au7700 intergrated amp. Also seems a bit distorted in higher volumes..my WAG is failing output transistors? Time for a repair?

Transistors are more like an ON/OFF switch. they either work or they don't. Your problem is elsewhere. More like old failing caps or resistors going "south" when they heat up.

Sounds more like a cap problem to me. Scope the signal from input to output after every active device, and see where the noise shows up, then check any electrolytic you find in that area.

Totally agree with that advice, I'd just add that sometimes a careful visual inspection will reveal that a cap has leaked its goo or is bulging. Sometimes a very careful visual inspection will save you tons of time measuring and probing around.

Also, check all your supply voltages and make sure they're correct.
