 Are amps like the M60 etc with optional class A still competitive soundwise with modern designs, assuming they are working properly?

 I have not really listened to much current equipment. I can tell you that the Yamaha M60 is a great sounding amp and sounds very good driving my Spendor BC-1's, although I much more often use my Threshold CAS-1, I still have my M60. You have to like the Yamaha sound, witch I do, which is slightly smoother than neutral. The M60 is true class A when you hit the button. The Threshold is sliding bias. The truth be known I prefer the lighter, more dynamic sound of the Threshold. However, it might be due to the fact that it is a cascade amp and not the bias, because my Yamaha M4 sound very similar to the Threshold (also a cascade amp). In Europe, the M4 had the Class A switch, but not in the US. That might give you the best of everything, but it would be unlikely that I would come across one.

There is one downside of the M60. It has the most annoying, 80's rack system style meters that I have ever seen. Face the amp away from you listening chair!
