There is nothing like the warmth of tubes in a cold northern US winter.
You can cross breed vintage AM with audio and build a nice modulator running a pair of 813s

I go on AM nets now and then but you don't get to say much but check in and get a signal report unless the net is small.

(WA1HLR) has a great sounding rig, homebrew X-mitter I think and tags on to a broadcast SW tower (right?)where he lives whose equipment he overseas and or operates. He is priceless to listen to burping and farting. One of my favorite things he said was when working on a particular old unit he said the SO-239 was looser than a worn out whore!

The best AM is ragchew not nets. The best places to find that are:

3.885 give or take a few KC's. this has the most traffic
7.290 give or take
3.705 has a few guys early PM

80M at night 40 could be most anytime

Some of the best sounding stations are on 3.885 including W2NBC, WA1HLR (who you just have to hear) The other two that stick out are a guy from Tennessee and one from Wisconsin but I forget their call signs although one is an 8 one a 4.

LOL
I know,I remember when Tim said that..He was able to work 40m AM phone into London from where he is at up in Maine..He has almost perfect propagation where he is at. Ever notice how strong his signals are? He bangs 5 by 9 on a regular basis.

I'm on 3873 almost every night. The 3885 crowd around here had to move down because of QRM from a few obnoxious sidebanders. Sometimes I get on 7290-7295 also. I've talked to Timtron WA1KLR many times. Al KJ4YEV

Six meters has become popular again. I have a complete Clegg six meter station with the linear amp. It doesn't do FM but it does to AM/SSB/CW.. My RCA TAC200 I use for six meter FM.

That's tame compared to some of the stuff on 14.313 or the SSB portion of 75M.

The club I'm a member of maintains a 6M machine at the 1000' level of a TV tower, co-located with a 2M and 440 machine. Although it's not a very good HT band, I had a VX-5R with 50MHz and used that feature about once :-p

Indeed~! In the 90's a $50 portable Grundig with a rod antenna was just fine getting him.
