I suspect some of you wonder why I've suddenly gotten so interested in headphones, given that my house is filled with loudspeakers in every room. Well, as some of you are aware, I had two hospitalizations earlier this year, plus a week in a rehab facility. I'm doing fine now, but I got to thinking about what could happen if I ever got stuck in a place where I couldnt play speakers loud, and further, I was very limited in space. What could work? And further, could headphones closely mimic what I hear from my loudspeakers? Where I am at this point is that ear-buds don't really cut it, and nore even the little over-ear Panasonic or Koss phones. I would go that route only if I were really constrained, say a long term stay in a hospital. But, the Nakamichis seem fine, and the choice is between the 890 High performance phones or the NK2000 that shut off even more external sound. I think which I would choose would depend on how much ambient noise I was dealing with, as the NK2000 do a better job of filtering that out. If I were alone in a small assisted living apartment I would go for the 890 model I think. TV/DVD is no problem. A laptop would work fine as a DVD player. I have a really nice 22" add on monitor that is 1080p and sharp as a bell on TV. Plus I have tons of DVD movies I've recorded off cable using my Toshiba recorder, all packed, 4-to-a-disk in a little case, and I COULD transfer them all to a 1 TB portable hard disk if necessary for a really compact (and inexpensive, as the 1TB disks are down to $69) setup. I even have a little USB device that not only makes any USB port into a headphone jack, it is supposed to create simulated 7.1 surround sound to the headphones. I need to try some experiments with this using a movie with a lot of surround sound such as one of the LOTR movies. Also, I greatly enjoy the $15 Nakamichis connected into Tunein radio (free) running from my 8" Android pad ($100). Not that I am contemplating having to do any of this any time soon. (I'm feeling fine and doing pretty much my normal things), but its nice to have a plan in place. Now some of you may be thinking David may not need great phones since his comparisons are with Utah speakers, but we will leave that discussion for another day! David |
