How about "anything tube powered and built before 1960"?

How about anything that works perfectly as long as you keep kicking it?

Vintage is a suggestive term used when talking about things of the past, whether it be television shows(who uses the word "television" anymore?, cars, audio. Even kitchen utensils or tools can be considered vintage depending on suggestion. I really don't think a specific year can be attached to the definition but many use a specific year as a reference. I guess that can be OK to do but who is to say what the year is to be. I feel the cars of the 60's and 70's to be vintage and not all cars. Just desirable ones and who determines "desirable?" There is a 4 door Oldsmobile Delta 88 in mint condition that I would buy but the asking price is $3500. I wouldn't give him more then $500. It's a nice clean car but to me not all that much of a car that I NEED to have.

So in my opinion vintage is a "suggestive" word.

There is modern analog equipment that I do not consider vintage. I also consider early CD players to be vintage. YMMV!

As 1 person on the city bus told me,"Anything that's outdated is vintage as he put his Doctor Beats headphones back on so he could continue to listen to his Apple device!

I like buying them used cheaply, too. Then I rip them to server for instant, shared use across four systems. Got tired of shuttling them back and forth. :)

You should be aware that stereo LPs emerge in 1959 and stereo really gets rolling in 1960 (yeah there were the earlier Cook records and rtr tapes, but stereo LP s are first mass market entry). Defining vintage as pre 60 would mean the mono era.

the problem is that new tube amps are still available AND some things built after 1960 are still interesting

I had a 67 Olds Delta 88 that had such a good AM radio that I kept it and the antenna when I sold the car;. ..., posted on September 24, 2014 at 15:58:31

Vintage = old.

How old? Now there's another can of worms altogether. A lot of it has to do with when you got involved. Guys who started in the 50s will see that stuff as vintage while guys who got their start in the 70s (like me) might see that stuff as vintage.

My daughter thinks iPods are vintage.

Dean.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

Some of the best recordings I have are mono ..... and I have never been too impressed with RCA Living Stereo, even though I still own a bunch. Give me a good Capital mono recording from late 50's and I am a happy man.
Some of the modern direct to disc stereo recordings are pretty good though, so I guess I would have to extend that out to stereo gear before all the SS started showing up. Where would that get us too, mid to late 60"s?

The new tube amps aren't vintage, but I would have to extend the time range as per my reply to unclestu.

1968 is a pivotal year. Both Mac n Marantz officially discontinue their top of the line all tube gear.

classical has well moved into stereo, but not pop or even jazz. Just look at the current hoopla bout the mono Beatles set.

I bought a Boltz CD rack for $5 at a thrift store, but I need to do some culling. I also have been giving CDs to friends, who are very appreciative.

I love my 50's and 60's mono records, which I have many, but you can have my RCA Living Stereo and my Mercury Living Presence when you pry them from my cold, dead fingers.

Now Mercury Living Presence is a different matter entirely. They have a cleaner, brighter sound than the RCA's, and I like most of them I have.

An audiophile company from the early days.

Did you know they would record ambient hall noise to splice in between movements of their pieces to avoid the dead silence?

During sound checks, they would set recording levels to the loudest passages and never touch them for the duration of the recording.

And they only used three mikes: center and L-R.

Interesting company that Bob Fine created.
