How many have one - or more - main stereos and why

 I find that I need two main systems. Not two separate systems. But two stereos using the same speakers and sources.

I need to switch between the two every few weeks. And EVERY time I do so, I relearn why I appreciated that stereo SOOO much.

In the past I had three, five, fifteen????? but two seems to be my magic number. Two REALLY good stereos.

One new and one old. What more can I ask for (no comments on that one please).

So how many of you use one, two, three or more stereos? And why

 1. Main system upstairs for the best sound quality
2. Vintage system in garage for spending time outside
3. Office system which drives in-house speakers and out by pool. That's where shared music server that drives all systems lives
4. Bedroom system. Hand me down components for better TV experience and listening to radio / digital library
5. HT system in family room for video

 One main system (connected to my computer to listen to free and new music all day), one in my garage and one for home theater (5.1)

 Reason? I scrounge a lot at garage and estate sales and, over time (certainly NOT overnight) have found some good pieces at steal prices that I like to put to use. Currently looking for gear for a second system in the "liberry".

 1. two turntables (stereo + mono) and one CDP/DAC out to tube amp then speakers.
2. two turntables (tube phone + ss phono) and one CDP/DAC out to two headphone amps then several sets of headphones.

the headphones stared out as a late night consideration for neighbors, my kid but the difference in inimacey, detail, and escapism on headphones is large.

 In my semi-permanent apartment here in Houston I have a black plastic JVC receiver, RX-554VBK - I'm guessing a mid 1990's model that actually sounds really good (I think JVC was one of the best sounding receivers of the dreaded black plastic era) - I also have some Klipsch KSB-3.1 speakers but never use them so as not to disturb the neighbors - always listen thru headphones.

Back home in Tulsa I have a Stereotech 1200 (by McIntosh) receiver with Altec Valencias in the man-cave and a Marantz 2215B with Klipsh Fortes in the living room. Unfortunately these days I only get to see them every other weekend, but they are my little slice of nirvana.

 The main stereo setup that is your pride and joy.

Do you feel you need just one?

Or do feel you a need to enjoy several "flavors" stereos?

And again, this is your main setup, not garage, workshops, etc....

 I pursue other hobbies and have just so much time & room (NYC) for my hobbies. So, I have just one audio system using tubes and upgraded to my tastes. No reason to have two audio systems as I am not a collector.

 I have secondary systems in the living room, bedroom, and my home office. The main system is in the family room and does double duty for movies and music. So there is a Yamaha HT receiver connected to the TV, DVD, DVR, CD, a pair of cassette decks, and 5 speakers and subwoofer. The receiver is also connected to a Denon integrated amp that I use for music. The turntable and CD player are connected to the integrated. The CD player has 2 outputs, one goes to the Yamaha and 1 to the Denon. I can connect either the integrated or the receiver to the main front speakers (Paradigm Studio 60). There is a third amp in a Sony ES receiver whose tape out is connected to the Denon. There is a tuner, a second CD player and second turntable connected to the Sony, which drives either the Paradigm speakers or a pair of B&W DM1600 speakers on the other side of the room. In total there are 2 receivers, 1 integrated amps, 1 television, 2 turntables, 2 CD players, 2 DVD players, 1 VCR, 1 DVR, 1 computer, 2 cassette decks, 7 speakers, and 2 subwoofers, all connected in one system. All the audio equipment except the cassette decks, the B&W speakers, and one of the CD players were acquired at garage sales. Total original MSRP is about 6 grand, but actual cost to me is about $500. Nobody else in the family can figure out how to operate it.

 I don't really have a main stereo either. I have 6 stereo systems set up in various parts of my life...along with a mono system, for a total of 7. I listen to them all depending upon where I am. They all have different strengths and I enjoy listening to them all. Four have turntables, 6 are tube based (one is SET), one is strictly for video.

 single ended 2A3 amplifier driving a pair of Altec Duplexes; details (mostly sources) can change, but the heart's been pretty consistent and likely will remain so for the foreseeable future.

 I have two, with enough for a third stashed in a trunk that serves as a coffee table.

The main system (Inmate Systems) is basically CD only, so I have another cabinet with vintage goodies such as a BIC turntable, Marantz 26 receiver, my prized Mac MR77 tuner, and Fried Betas for speakers. Plus a Sony dual-well cassette deck and a Denon carousel CD player I picked up at a neighborhood sale for 15 bucks.

I'm overstocked as usual, but that's what it is to be an inmate.

 I have two amps that I switch in and out. The low power one is best for most stuff, but when I want more power or just a different flavor I switch in the higher power amp(s). I do like having two flavors available.

 I have this insecurity issue, so I only have one at a time set up; but every so often I'll swap out components from my back up pile just to see how it compares, and if they still work. So I have the components for two complete systems in my den, and they are all interchangeable so I can mix and match; but only one system is set up and working at any given time.

The modified Advents and Rotel electronics always win, and over 90% of the time that's what's set up.
